Overclocking 4850, how far to go?

Okay, got my HIS Iceq4 4850 last week (cheers OCUK!) had a little play with overclocking it. From online reviews i've found that the turbox version of this card (clocks slightly higher... apparantly) tops out at about 700mhz on the core.

Well i've just gone past 700mhz with this card. Just wanted to make sure everythings okay and wondering what sort of temps i should be looking to stop at. How long should i stress test it too? I'm on 8 minutes now with no problems at 710mhz, shall i just keep going with it?

Got a screenie for anyone who would like it.

there is no really straight answer to this, every chip is different.
The temps look fine and your using the right tools as well.

Is up to you on how far you personaly want to push it, there will be a max that you can without pencil/volt modding the card but again this is different on every card, ive seen people get the core clock right up to 750 with a modded bios and the card being fantastic, simply answer is clock it till you get artifacts, then drop it by 10 that will give you your max without modding the bios or volt modding it.

I got artifacts at 735, so have dropped it down to 721 at the minute.

I guess the next thing would be a pencil mod or something then. Might wait a bit longer before i try this, it is only a week old after all :D

Onto the memory now then ;)

720/1100 for me with Gareths modded bios, 1gb card though. Personally, I would run 3dMark 06 and note what you are actually getting fps wise. For me, getting to 700/1080 with original bios gave a significant gain but the small tweaks (some unsuccessful too) only yielded a couple of fps anyway :)

Atitool does not test stability well enough anymore. Games will start crashing (with the card stopped working error) long before atitool shows artifacts.

I find that 3dmark06 game tests in loop are good at testing stability. Its the first thing to crash when I overclock too much. Even 3dmark vantage doesnt crash as early. A couple of races in GRID is also good at testing stability.

725/1125 for me, changed coolers to a HR-03 R600 which dropped temps a good few degrees more than the standard HR-03.

Will try the modded BIOS tomorrow.

Pencil modding resulted in a very hot card that made horrible noises underload, did improve my clocks but I wasn't going to kill the card for another 50mhz on the core.

Any 4850 users with the stock cooler, pick up one of these:

Dave, would I still be able to crossfire in the future?

I have this and the cooler is crap, got well over 100° under load, stuck an 80mm fan on which brought down to under 65° under load.

Have you got a link Helios, should be a good read? :)

I didn`t mean anything with what I said, just a bit topical fun if you read the whole post :)

Edit: Found it

Bombed out at those speeds though but hey, not bad at all!

Hehe yeah I know :p, the internet makes me sound serious. I didn't want to post though the link due to competitor links etc.

Nah, you didn`t sound serious but I thought I should maybe give insight as to why I commented as I did :)

That is a mighty fine OC though. They only used Riva so leads me to wonder what the voltage is on this particular card? At stock, it fared pretty well vs the big guns!
