***I posted this in overclocking and cooling but it might be better suited here***

Hi folks,

I have a Power colour 4870 512mb and I am looking at pushing it a bit further. I have swapped the stock cooler for an accelero s1 so it runs nice and cool (40 degrees at idle, around 55 under load)

I have my card at 790/1100 overclocked in CCC but that is as high as it goes. I downloaded rivatuner so I could push it a bit further. I reduce the memory to 900 and just concentrated on the core. I just uppped it by 10 and then ran 3dmark 06 to check for artifacts etc. I didn't see any until I got to 880. I decided to stick to 870, the last setting I had before the artifacts, but I found the second time I was at this setting there were artifacts again. Every time I knocked it down 10mhz it was the same until I had it at stock level and still they were there. I have just restarted my pc and it is now fine again at 790/1100, no artifacts.

What did I do wrong, what is the best method for overclocking the card?

Thanks

Matt

loads temps are around 55. Do you guys know why it went all weird when I got artifacts and they didn't go away until I put my card to stock and then restarted the comp?

Also what metod do you use to test them? I found ati tool got artifacts really quickly but it didn't artifact in 3dmark 06

Thanks

I have my card clocked at 810/1125 and there is no artifacts in ati tool. If I up it to 820 then I get artifacts after about 5 mins in ati tool. Is there anyway of getting it higher or is that as high as it will go? It's probably as cool as it is ever going to be (unless I go to water cooling). Are there any bios upgrades that I can get that could help me push it further?

Thanks

Probably isn't heat, its voltage the cards are lacking.

My max is 839 and that is with both the stock cooler and watercooled. The temps never go above 40C but I didn't get a single extra Mhz of overclock.

All current 4870 bios give the same voltage. The Asus is good as it allows you to overclock further in CCC and it has the best fan profile I;ve seen which keeps your card cooler.

So 810 is the limit of your card unless you volt mod or bios with increased voltages appear which I doubt they will.

I find the same, ATI tool won't artifact until 839 yet 3dmark06 doesn't until 875 and vantage doesn't until 890.

I'd stick with the ATI tool setting though as anything above 839 on mine starts crashing in games after so long.

Guess 3dmark06 doesn't stress the gpu as much as ati tool.

Yep - my clocks are only 3d mark stable :p

Your 4870's load temps are 55 degrees? How? I though most stock 4870's idled in the 70's...
