Overclocking 7900GTO problems.

Ok, just recently after reinstalling XP from Vista, I can not overclock properly with either the drivers, or with rivatuner.

The core overclocks ok, and stays at the speed I set, but the memory doesnt. Everytime I restart after clicking "Click here to apply at startup" or in rivatuner "Apply settings at startup" and restart, the speed will be back to 660 again.

Any ideas what Im doing wrong or is a driver reinstall due?

Which brand 7900GTO is it? Do you know if it has Samsung memory?

If so there is your problem, it's not been happening often but it has been happening. The 7900GTO is essentially a rebadged 7900GTX with lower memory clocks and volts, some have the old Samsung memory that caused lots of problems some time back.

No idea what memory it is, the writing on the chips was too faint when I took the cooler off to water block it.

Just had a bit more fiddling with it. In the drivers, the limit you can choose is 800 for the memory.
Now, in rivatuner, when I select 800 and apply the settings for startup, and restart, it'll boot again WITH the 800 applied.

Anything I select over that, and it defaults back to 660. Could this be a driver limitation that isnt letting the PC boot with more than 800? I can select well over that in rivatuner and play games fine, however a reboot will default the settings applied.

Strange indeed, Nightstalker I know has rivatuner setup at over 800mem. Mate, can you verify that it's booting at that?

Cheers.

Ummm, no.
The 7900 GTOs dont have those problems as stated many many times!
I dont even know how you even thought up that it could be a hardware problem

Its a software problem, used to happen to me using coolbit back in the 6800 days. Not sure how to fix it though

I think I'll have to just leave it at 800 for now then. Either that or change it manually everytime I boot :D

And yes, the GTO's are fine. No problems whatsoever. :)

In all fairness, its your lack of reading skills that started all this. GTO's. Are. Fine. Live with it. :)
Yeah sorry, for a moment I thought we were talking about cards with the exact same cores and memory as a 7900GTX. The same Samsung memory that was supposedly replaced some time ago with Infineon no less.

Oh, wait. :o

They fixed something though, so your argument is void. If the GTO's suddenly start failing, then you can have the last laugh. Until then, dont assume, it only makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me" :P

I'm fully aware of what they did. They switched the memory from Samsung to Infineon (funnily enough a lot of GTOs have Samsung) but even that did not solve all of the problems, which they then suspected were also caused by faulty voltage regulators.

Nothing was done about the voltage regulators as the 7950GT etc. were coming out anyway and the GTX never had a failure rate as bad as the 7900GT but did still fail for the same reasons now and again.

The 7900GTO is just a 7900GTX with lower clocks and slightly lower voltages on the memory. It's only natural that if there were problems with the GTX they would carry over, albiet not with the massive 5% failure rate of the GT.

I'm not after the last laugh, I'm just tired of people like you who get so defensive about the GTX -> GTO thing that they want to censor people from even talking about, it and throw their dummy out of their prams with knee-jerk reactions when it is mentioned.

If you have a GTO and it works then fine, I am glad to hear that you're happy with your graphics card, but don't try to censor me just because you don't like to hear that there is a design flaw.

You say Im getting defensive, ofcourse I am. It's my opinion based on experience that the GTO's are fine. I also havnt thrown my toys out of the pram and given a knee jerk reaction, I was stating what has been said time and again. If thats how you base arguments then I really cant be bothered to contribute further.

Don't address a single one of the points, just say that your opinion is right and my opinion is wrong. Textbook.

Have a good evening.

I can't get my memory clocks to stick if I clock it above 800 either.

I don't see how this is a hardware issue though? Anyway mines running fine its probably just nvidia drivers and rivatuner clashing.

Not sure if this is relevant but in the rivatuner help it says you won't get persistance of overclocking above the coolbits maximum unless you change the startup daemon in Rivatuner.
I've not played with this myself yet since I want to let my GTO run at the max setting under coolbits for a while.

Probally teaching you to suck eggs but it specifically says that if you don't get rivatuner to loadup at boot time and reset the cards clocks then cooolbits / nvidea's drivers will set it back to the maximum allowed by coolbits.

Maybe try overclocking with a different program, like powerstrip..?

Yeah I saw that setting and tried it aswell, still wont work :(

Ahwell, 800 is plenty fast enough ;D
