i bought from OCuk some time ago a bfg pre overclocked 8800gtx.

just got my q6600 stable @3700, and wanted to get a bit more out of the card as i seem to get a low score in 3dmark06.

at the moment i get in the mid 14000 which seems to me a bit low.
problem is if i up the gpu clock or mem by even 2mhz it freezes in 3dmark.

does that mean the card is at its limit or is it something i am doing wrong?
tried in riva tuner and nvidia control panel. below are specs.

My BFG 8800GTX doesn't seem to overclock well at all. Seeing as yours as pre-overclocked I don't know how much you can expect to squeeze out of it. Probably not much. Your 3D Mark score looks pretty good to me though

thanks for reply it just these new fangled 8800gt seem to stomping all over it.
i thought they where still a bit slower than the gtx.

but i see some get 750 on the core.

You should be able to get far higher than that, Dont worry about clocking the mem past the 1000 point as it makes little difference to performance and may also limit the core and shader OC.
Download and use the gigabyte gfx ocing tool (cant remember the name) and you should be able to push it higher. Im on water but temps dont limit the oc on these cards anyway. By dropping my mem to 1050 i pushed the core to 670 stable and the shader to 1650 stable.
The GT can get close to the GTX at lower resolutions but at 1920x1200 16x af/aa a gtx pushes well ahead.
ps, a gtx with a core of 750 would be volt modded and water cooled.

Nice one. I can only get 630Mhz core with my OCUK GTX. I get 1050Mhz Memory and 1650Mhz Shader clock too.

I think the manufactured cards are a little bit better when it comes to overclocking.

Thats pretty good. Mine seems to get unstable anything past 610 core. Is the tool you mentioned better than Riva Tuner?

Riva Tuner is great if you want to micromanage the gpu but for me all i want is to manually adjust the Core, Shader and Mem speeds.
Ive been testing this morning and ive settled at 660/1670/2080 with the main effort being Core and Shader speed then finally pushing the mem until it couldnt pass ATI Tool.

@pegasus1.
thanks for the advice, it was my drivers stopping riva working correctly. it was not showing shader clock at all.

first time i used it and i thought that was all it shows. latest beta drivers and it shows all three sliders.:o

anyhow now gone up from 14400 to 15500, with just an hours tinkering.

Nice, what clocks you at now?

When the ATI Tool starts showing yellow dots, Im guessing thats bad. Although it still says no errors.

Im just interested in OCin the card. Would a better choice by nTune (or whatever coolbits is thesedays) rather than RivaTuner

Have you run the ATI 3d tool to see if is stable?

No, got confused with the artefact tester, when I used to run it with an ATI card the image in the window used to revolve, with my GTX the image is still so wasn't sure it was working, also when I closed down the app it came out with loads of unexpected errors so I've uninstalled it

Now run seven 3DMark06's back to back, everything spot on so far

Run ATI tools artifact tester, if yellow dots appear then you need to back down on the clocks, i would leave the shader and mem at stock and push the core until it artifacts then back off a little, do the same wih the Shader then the mem.

Im not so sure 3Dmark is particularly as GPU intensive as earlier editions.

Will retry ATI tools then
I know the limits under 3DMark06, ie the clocks at which the PC froze even though all temps were fine were 675/1704/2096 which is why I've settled for the clocks I have

The above clocks were done individually when PC froze, not with all clocks done at the same time, ie 675/1450/2000 still froze etc

Thanks
