Ok so long story short. I'm new to overclocking and only had a i5 3450 (which I managed to get 3.6GHz) with a MSI Z77A-G45 motherboard and 32GB of 1600MHz Corsair XMS memory. The cooler is a Corsair H60 which I'm sure you will all recommend I replace.
My choices were simple.
1: Go all out for a i7 7700K new motherboard and DDR4 memory (and cooler most likely) but that is expensive for the gain over the below option.
2: Purchase either a 2600K or a 3770K to replace my CPU only and nothing else. A much cheaper option, also I found a place that had them 2nd hand with 'ok' prices with 24 month warranty. I opted for, at least trying 1st, the second option. In fact I went ahead and bought both the 2600K and 3770K as the 2600K was £80 cheaper, plus from what I have read overclocks almost the same as the other chip.
So as it stands the 3770K arrived this morning and I have put it in my machine. I ran IntelBurn Test and found the best overclock/voltage of 4.4GHz @ 1.24 volts. It is, in my opinion so far, the best I have been able to get stable without going to above 1.3/1.32 volts to achive 4.5GHz+. I am now currently running Prime95 (not sure if there is something better to use) at the stable 4.4GHz though it has only beeen running for 40 minutes. The highest temp I have seen according to Real Temp on the 4 cores are: 82 - 84 - 79 - 73
I'm waiting for the 2600K to arrive so I can see what I can get from that and possibly save £80, but my question is... Is that overclock and voltage ok? I'm guessing it's not a golden chip but I want to know if it is a bad one or if there is anything else I can do to improve it. Also if I move over to a 240mm AIO cooler will that all mean that I can retain that 4.4GHz overclock and reduce the voltage/reduce the voltage needed for this chip to hit 4.5GHz or above.
Many thanks for any advise in advance
