Overclocking a 470GTX, some questions

I downloaded MSI afterburn as i am of the understanding this works on all GTX470 cards

This is the first time i used this program, when i OC my 280 i used NVidia Tools, so forgive me if some of the stuff i ask is a little basic

I assume i just change the core/shader/mem freq and then hit the apply button and jobs done?

I'm going to stick with stock volts, what should i expect in terms of OC ability on mem/core/shaders

I know in the past there's been some discussion on the merits/drawbacks of increasing the values in a non proportional manner I'E 15% core increase, 10% mem increase, over increasing all the values by the same %, do i need to increase things in unison or can i just try and get the best out of each part without worrying about increasing one value by a bigger % than the others?

yes thats all you need to do to clock the card up.

althou it wont be a permanat change, when you reboot it'll be back to the original settings.

once your happy with the clock, u can select the option at the bottom to apply the settings on startup

Ok cool, any idea on what clocks i should aim for on stock volts?

I have been playing around with a 470 over the weekend. As always the overclock you can expect varies a lot with every component but to give you a rough guide on stock volts i was getting the 700-720Mhz range on the core without any problems. I left the core clock and shader linked (can you still unlink them?? Not really had a look) along with the 700Mhz on the core i got 1900Mhz on the memory.

I think a higher core clock is slightly better than a higher memory clock if you have to choose though, its been a while since i played with any new hardware so might be wrong .

Reading around i have noticed the 470 doesn't like a lot of increase in the memory's speed - just some extra info for you.

for overclocking a 470:

1) don't overclock the memory, it's like paying to haul around a bag of bricks for the rest of your life, overclocking memory just wastes energy, makes little (<~0.2fps) difference to performance other than lowering max core clock.

2) stock volts should get you to 750-775MHz, max volts you should go is 1087mv and with that you could get anywhere between 800 and 870

3) set up a good fan profile in afterburner, I have my two points at 30,30 and 90,90 because it gives me reasonable noise and temps

Thanks for the help, i decided to be more conservative this time round, when OC the card as my old 280 made quite a lot of noise when the fan was turned up

I OC the cpu to 3.8 and with a mild OC on the 470 i think my gamming needs should be well looked after for another 18 months

In the end i went for a nice set of round numbers 650 core, 1300 Shader and 1700 on the memory, this should work fine with the stock fan profile and give a small boost to the cards speed

I can always push harder later if the need arises

yeh memory ocing seems like more for your mind than actual performance, my 6800 GE, 8800 640 and GTX 280 didn't perform any differently with memory overclocked.

It's all about core core core, and get the shaders up but I don't push em too far personally
