Overclocking a 5050e for video encoding?

Hi all,

I built my PC intending it to be a low power/low noise unit for use as an HTPC, hence the AMD 5050e.

I'm just trying to re-encode some .vobs into mkv's so I can manage them a bit easier (and see if it's worth it) but it's going to take around 8 hours to encode a movie with the settings I've picked.

Will overclocking the CPU make a real difference to this? It's on the stock cooler, currently running at under 50 degrees at full load so I'm not sure if I'd be able to get a decent clock speed from it anyway.

Never overclocked before, I wanted to ask before I wasted hours perfecting the overclock for only a small reduction in the time it takes!

Thanks = )

Personally I wouldn't bother, unless you want to do it and will enjoy doing so.

How long are you going to spend messing about, only to save half a hour or so off each run.

Anyway, if it's taking that long why don't you just leave it running overnight. It will be done in the morning whether it takes 8 hours or an overclocked 7.5.

Well I wouldn't enjoy doing it, I'd prefer to leave everything stock since it's powerful enough to do everything else I throw at it (including running UT3 pretty well, which surprised me).

As there doesn't appear to be a significant gain I'll just stick with it. I have a good few movies to get through but if it's only going to cut the odd half hour off then it's not worth it.

I may try running it overnight, although I sleep in the same room so we'll have to see!

Thanks :)
