overclocking a 965 be

try upping the clock and lowering the mutipler . when i fiddled with the asus oc utilty today ( just got pc back ) the extreme autotuen had it running soemthing stupid on it .. was 230 something x 17 multipler . was at 4.080 ghz ( that 1st figure not right lol ).

not tried a bios oc yet .. but prime was hitting just over 50 c after 3 hrs

Mine didn't require a voltage tweak for 4GHz, but i wasn't prepared to go higher as i didn't see the point in increasing voltage which brings increased heat with it.

Well I've tried various multiplier/HT settings today...some blue screen after 30 mins in prime..(temps 56 deg) others freeze the comp as soon as applied. Can't even get to 3850 so 3800 seems to be the limit. Fans still set on low-med.

Just did a run thru on farcry3...from the beginning to the first save at the village with colourful lights. Not much of a proper test but not crashed & heat was in lower 40's at the end and fps where you're creeping at the beginning would drop to 50's in a couple of places b4 oc..now they don't drop below 60's. So tha's an improvement. Tnx for the suggestions :)

Don't use Prime, just use 3D Mark if you game, it's what i used and my overclock has been fine for well over a month now.

Think going above the 3800 achieved is memory related.

My comp is generally rock solid and also not had any probs since upping multi to 19x for 3800 @v1.4875 & cpu nb 2600 (with increased v)

ran memtest for a few mins ..(no time right now) at current 3800 above...no errors...

lowered multi to 18x & set ht to 214 (from preset 200) to give higher 3852mhz. (thru overdrive)....memtest was throwing out memory errors soon after.

Weak memory or needs tweaking....timings/voltage I dunno...Anyway up for work at 3am so have to call it a day here.:(

nothing wrong with clocking with ht ref, in fact its what i class as real overclocking, like how it used to be back in the day.
But with your increase in ht ref It sounds like you have overclocked the ram whilst doing so.
Also pay attention to your command rate ie 1t or 2t aswell as your ram timings.

Also there no reason why you can't underclock your ram, (reducing ram multi) to find you cpu potential first.

Oh I forgot that bit...yeah you're right Davedree...upping ht ref clock did change mem frequency to a higher setting and also cpu nb.

Think timings stayed the same..(9 9 9 27) Don't know what command rate is but it's 1t. Anyway my ram is normally 800mhz (1600) so I reduced it down so it stayed below 800 (when changing ht values). Also kept cpu-nb between 2400-2600. Still blue screens/freezes when I run prime with any combo of multiplier/ht above 3800. ran memtest at one point with no errors now the freq was reduced.

Thought I was gonna get lucky after having reduced memory freq....upped cpu to 3900 & it went thru 3d mark/ performance test/ heaven benchmark & a sleeping dogs benchmark run-thru no probs.....but crashed the moment I put prime on. I did the oc's in bios alone this time. Seem to be learning little bits along the way here but I need a big bottle of paracetamol lol. Cheers Andy.

(don't use prime)..that's very tempting right now wes :)
