overclocking a 975

Under what cooling? With some skill, air should be 4ghz, water 4.4ish, phase 5ghz. Some people manage more than this, but not by very much.

Essentially there's no point to anything above the 920/930 if you're using air cooling. Water can just about justify the 950, but that's a stretch. Anything below phase and you're wasting your money on a 975.

hey

I watercool a 975 using the swiftech apogee xt cpu water block and black ice extreme radiators in a thermaltake armor+ case. I also watercool a BFG H2OC gtx 295.

I comfortabley get 4.2GHz with temps in high 30s low 40s at idle. Crysis on max settings plays like a dream. all ive done is up the multiplier!! havent played with voltages

I really havent had time to really have a play since building the system.
I agree you need to watercool an £800 cpu!!

So, yeh the 975 is expensive, but it's real easy and a very stable cpu. I'd have another in the blink of an eye. Infact when that 2x lga1366 evga motherboard is released i might lol

You've left the voltages set to auto, and the board has increased them by an unknown amount for you, as if they were at stock you would not be stable. A 920 D0 will sit comfortably at 4.2ghz under water cooling. Anything below phase, and you've wasted money on the 975. Sorry :(

The 2xlga1366 evga board won't run two 975 chips, you need two xeon processors for that. The exciting part is that it can overclock the two xeon chips, and that you can run dissimilar xeon processors together.

That aside, welcome to the forums Commander.
