hi

is there some recommended settings i should use to see what my chip and board can do with the following, are the components rubbish for o/cing?

Asrock dual vsta with bios 2.90

2 gig of Kingston value ddr2 667 mhz ram

E6300 core 2 duo processor

Windows is on a old 40 gig ide hdd (XP-pro)

i have tried to follow guides but it don;t seem to work.

have a 650 wt psu

stock heatsink and fans.

case is well vented with 120 mm fans front and rear.

I'm afraid the e6300 is a poor choice of processor for the 4coredual/vsta due to its limited stable fsb overclock and the e6300's low 7x multiplier. You're only ever going to reach just over 2ghz with it.
In your position I'd sell the e6300 and invest in a e2180 as that has an 10x multiplier and is only about £55. Should be possibe to reach 2.9ghz or higher.

i purchased it ages ago when they first came out.

my system is sluggish and not sure if processor board or ram. upgrading my board and ram first. it's the dual vsta and not the 4 core dual vsta by the way.

i will look at a better processor and may get a quad core.

Dual/vsta or 4coredual/vsta it's the same board. I have both. Had the dual/vsta since their introduction last sept/oct. Used it with an e6600 which was around £220 when purchased
As I said the greatest defining factor for overclocking with the Asrock is the multiplier of the chip you use it with as you're only going to be stable at 290fsb or a few mhz more. A few lucky people with DDR and AGP will be stable at 300mhz.

right, sounds like a board, chip and ram upgrade then. want a new mobo asap as my whole system is slow.
