I just want a decent overclock for a Palit GTX260 Sonic 216SP without much messing about, something that doesn't really push much but will get a nice improvement, what software do i need and what kind settings should i use?

MSI Afterburner for overclocking.

Should be able to run 720/1440 core/shader without too much trouble tho a few cards won't manage it. Can't remember memory clocks off hand but IIRC 1152 was the highest value that should work on most cards.

The core generally seems to give best performance when running at half the shader clock and the shader clock only goes up and down in steps I can't remember the exact step size but it was about 26MHz IIRC so setting say 1500 or 1513 would result in the actual shader clock running at 1512 for both for instance.

Thanks, that looks easy enough, i just ran the software and core is at 625 and shader is 1348, should i go up in small steps or just set the core to 700 and shader 1400 or something?

Its usually best to go up in small steps and test it with a couple of programs. Your probably not going to see a huge jump in performance tho as your only going to get the shader clock up around 10% tops which averages about 7-8% framerate gain.

So is it worth doing?

When i move the slider they both move, should i unlink them, otherwise i can't get the core that high without going too far with shader?

Would need testing tbh - some cards work best with the stock ratio and increasing with them linked other cards get better performance unlinked and pushing them as far as each will go. I've found 720/1440 unlinked usually gives the best combination for performance with the shader clock under 1500MHz and you will definitely need testing to go above 1500MHz shader clock.
