For my old gs7600 there was a program that was part of the nvidia driver that let you overclock the card

I remember is had a very handy auto mode were it basically overclocked the card for you to a safe level, not being a expert on these things i found that very useful

The program was part of the nvidia driver/utilities set and not a 3rd party item problem is i forgot how to unlock it, is this available in the gtx280 drivers? how do you unlock it and does it work as well on this card as it did on the 7 series? sorry if this is basic stuff but my OC level of skill is at the very basic level

I think the program you're referring to is called Coolbits, which unfortunately has never worked properly with Nv's updated contol panel.

Your best bet is to familiarize yourself with Rivertuner for oc'ing your card, and Furmark for testing its stability. :)

also try Gainward Expertool. I used it to overclock my 8800GTX and I'm looking foward to trying it out on Monday when I get my GTX280 :D

Thanks, i downloaded Riva Tuner and it looks a very advanced overclocking tool, i'm new to all this so it's probably going to take a while to get my head around it, however one really good thing i did discover was the dx overrider tool that comes with it

I like v sync as i find the tearing you get without it is very noticable and not something i really want to see in my games especially with todays modern hardware, being able to force triple buffering on in direct x should help to negate the perf hit you sometimes get when using v sync so i' pretty happy about finding that little tool, i always assumed the triple buffering box in the nvidia 3d settings worked in direct x.... but from the comments i read on the subject it appears it does not.....

cheers guys, i'm really learning a lot of useful stuff on these forums

When I had a BFG GTX280 I used to use EVGA Precision, you can use it without a EVGA card. It is written by the same people that have created RT and it is constantly being developed...

It is very easy and simplistic to use, it must be I could use it, and it gives you many O/C functions without the complexity, for me, of RT.

Now I'm using a 4870 I am using ATT.

Furmark is useless on my GTX280, I can run settings in furmark that appear to be stable, but crash within 5 min of actually running a game even though the temps are a good 20C lower.
