Hello Guys,

This is my first post on OC although I've been a long time reader.

I have recently got a I7 4970k and its a beast. She is running happily but these CPU's are built for Overclocking I wanted to do my very first Overclock on it.

I was thinking of using the BIOS to OC it as a I have an ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Hero ATX.

Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series™ H100i

So my questions:
  1. What program/ software do you guys recommend using ?
  2. What Temps should I aim for and what tems should I be worried about ?
  3. What software should I use for testing after I done the overclock
  4. Am I mising anything ? :)

Thanks for reading ! Sorry if this question has been asked before

Hello and welcome :)

Don't use software, do it through the bios. Make sure your bios is updated.
Max temp from intel is 95c but i'd want to keep it below 80.
Asus realbench, is recommended by everyone. Best for measuring temps.
Use Hwininfo64 for monitoring :)

I wouldn't use more than 1.3 when overclocking, depending on how good your chip is you should be able to reach 4.8ghz.

Post benchmark scores once done!

Here is a link to the 4790k owners thread, you can get an idea of other peoples clocks etc: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18606730

I got mine to 4.5GHz OC using 1.26V, I could probably push it higher / go lower voltage for 4.5 but I'm setting up a custom loop in a few days so going to wait until I've got that all up and running before messing about with my CPU

mine is running at 24/7 4.6ghz @1.215v. I did try to get it higher to 4.7 but it wouldnt have it and backed off at 1.3v!

Thanks for the replies all, I'm going to give it ago this weekend when i have more time.

One thing that does concern me however. Under heavy loads (Withcher 3, google chrome and spotify open etc.) MSI afterburner says my CPU can get to 70c only to go down again when the next poll comes through.

This may be the software however as it is for GPU's not CPU's. I liketo use it because of the in game display which is great so I do not have to minimize or play in windowed mode .
I'll try one of the temp programs that you have suggested and see how it goes !

Updates coming night or tomorrow morning.

Thanks again !

Afterburner is fine for GPU, but the one i mentioned shows your individual core temp so you'll get a good guide from that.

It's nice because you can have it next to the stress test when that's going.

Do a stress test before you start, see your maximum temps before you start :)

Ive got my replacement i7 4790 in my rig now and it seems a lot better than the one that died.
4.6Ghz at 1.225v seemed stable enough, it would fold and complete a score in real bench.
Whilst I type I'm at 4.5Ghz at 1.2v running real bench stress test 64-55 across all cores but generally within 3 or 4 'c of each other.
Whats regarded as a sensible 24/7 voltage and temp for these processors?
Thanks.

Do you know which version of 4790k you have ? The later ones are good overclockers (made in Vietnam)

I can get 4.6ghz @ 1.18v stable. Have a look at the 4790k owners thread in the CPU forum.

Its a Vietnam CPU and yes it hits 4.8 stable, it's stable in todays heat folding and surfing at 4.5ghz at 1.18 and will post at 4.9 at 1.3v-core, I'm optimistic that with tweaking of other voltages that it will real bench at 4.9 ghz too.
It is a totally different animal to the Malaysia i7 4790 its replaced under warranty when it couldn't be bothered to post anymore, that thing wouldn't even post at 4.6ghz
