Hi there.

Anyone know how to oc a i7 950 to about 3.5ghz or more safely without much testing on a P6X58D-E with a cooler im not sure of probably stock tho. He has that P6X58D-E motherboard from asus that seems popular i think. Has 12gb of 1600mhz ram i believe as well.

Its for a mate whos wanting to get more out of arma3 as his new 670 card from a 560ti isnt enough to get him above 30fps.

Cheers.

The first thing you need to do is buy an aftermarket cooler. These chips get hot at the best of times

I'm not experienced enough to make recommendations.
I currently have a Thermaltake Frio dual fan setup on my i7 950, it's good, but I'm sure it could be improved on.
I've just received a couple of 212 Evos for the new work PC builds. I've not built them yet, but it looks very nice with good build quality. If the reviews are anything to go by, it should be a great cooler.

My mates ordered a Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev.2 CPU Cooler. He said he looked around and seen this as a good one so i hope it does him ok. Anyone got any experience with this cooler with a i7 950 overclock?

Thanks for the reply btw, i didnt know he already ordered one himself.

I have the exact same board and chip and use a H70. Although I managed to destroy the overclock almost from when I got it from OCUK and never bothered to put it back on now the damn thing runs super cool

I have had this board with a 930 and some kind soul on another forum gave me the settings for a 4ghz oc which has been solid for 2+yrs, still have them if you want them Skeeteruk.

Ta.

Also im lookin around the web for info the that arctic freezer xtreme rev2 and i cant find anywhere that says its any good for overclocking a i7. Anyone know if this is a good buy or shall i see if my mate can return it if its no good for him. He wants to get a modest clock out of his 950 i think to at least about 3.8 to 4ghz with his chip so i really want him to get a cooler that can do that for him. But i just dunno if the xtreme is up to it.

So hes managed about 3.8ghz and gets temps of about 52 idle and 70 load with the new cooler. I thought the idle seems a bit high but the load seems reasonable tho i would have hoped 4ghz would be 70 and 3.8 would be about 65 ish range.

Does this seem about what to expect from the cooler u think?

He told me he got 59 idle and high 70s using the stock cooler with a 3.4ghz before. So seems the cooler has helped.

Think he mentioned that hes using a multi of 20 and his ram is at 760.
