Hey OcUK,

I've recently upgraded my system by adding a GTX480, and I've been starting to think I should OC my Q6600 off from it's stock speeds.

I'm currently getting mixed signals on the temp of the cores:

HWMonitor
  1. 35
  2. 34
  3. 28
  4. 30

SpeedFan
  1. 25
  2. 24
  3. 17
  4. 20

Core Temp
  1. 34
  2. 33
  3. 27
  4. 28

I was just wondering what kind of clock speed I might be able to expect from overclocking it.

What Q6600 is it? G0 or B3?

A G0 will generally reach 3600 without too much hassle whereas a B3 will generally be 400mhz below that.

Nobody can give you an exact figure as each chip and setup is different.

CPU-Z tells me that it's a G0.

And I knew that it'd be said it's different for each chip but I'd just like to get an idea as to the kinds of speeds I can reach using it. (I'd rather not spend out on a new chip whilst having to get a new mobo and ram)

How simple is the overclocking process, I've read the stickies and gathered it's just more of a process of bumping up the FSB reducing the RAM divider to keep it at stocks and then just stability testing it.

Simple is only up to the limit where you start needing to tweak the more advanced settings to get above the 'simple' limit. On mine, I've managed 3.4Ghz on a G0 with basically no tweaking at all and it's 100% stable. 3.6 is stable in game, but crashes Prime within about 5 seconds on core3 (number 4), so will need tweaking or voltage somewhere.

As I've been finding out, the quads really dump a lot more heat than the nicely cool dual core's, you will need good case airflow to get the best from them.

Look up the 'official q6600 overclocking thread' and you will see my rough settings if you go near the end of the thread :-)
