Hi,

Haven't overclocked a system in quite some time, well since Duron's were around and just wondering what was a good place to start with the Core 2 Quad, I got a Q6600.

Thanks

I just got my Q6600. I did not get a free copy of the game in my box :(
Its no longer mentioned on the website either.

It is B3. By the way I notice that the B3 has a thermal limit of 62.2 but also the G0 version has a thermal limit of 72. So with the lower TDP as well, doesn't that mean potentially even more overclocking ability?

I have run some quick tests at stock speeds. I have an ASUS P5W DH. I am using Asus probe at the moment to see temperatures. Ambient is 23 degrees.

At idle it is hovering at 34 degrees. I then ran CPU burn-in, 4 instances of it with error checking disabled for maximum heat. The CPU temperature rose no higher than 51 degrees but the fan went crazy and span up to 3500RPM!! I must say its quieter than previous fans at that speed. At idle the fan speed is 1400RPM (near silent).

Should the fan be spinning up that high when it isn't even anywhere near the thermal limit of the CPU?

Futher tests are less positive. It seems the Asus P5W with Asus probe reads very optimistically. Of course it reads a nearby point rather than the cores, but the differential is high.

Idle with Asus probe = 34
Full load with Asus probe (using Orthos Prime) = 51

Using RMClock
Idle cores are = 51,51.5,52.5,54
Full load = 71,72,74,77

Interesting differences across the cores.

I guess this is still well within thresholds, but I am unlikely to get much overclocking from this without a different heatsink. What do others think?

I got a q6600 b3 stepping on an asus PW5 DH, have got 3.06 ghz on it

what i couldnt believe was how bad the IHS on these things was, was running full load @ 58-62 overclocked, now i have lapped the IHS, running 48-50 so nearly a 10 degree drop in temps under watercooling :O

on starting the lapping, it was so plain to see that the middle was incredibly sunken, took ages to get it flat.......

however now nice n cool at 3..running prime stable and gaming nicely ;)

whats the best board for clocking these though, im sure there must be some improvement to be had over 340 FSB's ?

The max temp of 62.2c is the motherboard cpu temp, not the individual inside the core temps. So dont panic if your getting individual core temps of over 70c on load. The Q6600 wont even throttle untill around 85c on the individual core temps ;-)

Am example is, mine has never gone above 57c on the motherboard cpu temp or over 75c on the inside individual core temps when my room was very toasty and its very stable on orthos torture test at those temps.
