im thinkin of overclocking my cpu a little to increase performance. my understanding of it is that with my current untweaked system i can OC to around 3.2ghz without increasing any voltage. is this correct?

problem is that my system currently runs at 70c at full load. if i then OC then its gonna run even higher which im led to believe isnt really safe. ive tryed puting more fans in the case but it still runs at the same temp.

would i be better advised to get a better heat sink fan before overclocking?

i forgot to add that i use 3 different programs to test temp and get 3 different results.

intel thermal analysis = 56c
real temp = 70c
core temp = 65c

these are full load readings but which one do i go by?

alright ive now got a new hsf and my cpu is runnin in the mid 30's at idle so im happy enough with that. now onto some overclocking. ive been followin these instructions

Finding Max CPU Clockspeed

1. Increase the FSB by 5MHz.
2. Decrease the RAM divider if required to keep it at stock or less
3. Run Prime Small FFT to test stability
4. Run it for 30mins, it may be worth testing for FSB stability as well if you haven't already proven FSB stability at this point. If it passes return to 1, if it fails goto 5. Keep an eye on temperatures whilst testing.
5. Increase the Vcore a notch and repeat the testing phase until temperatures are getting close to the maximum for your CPU, or the voltage increases don't allow you to overclock any further.

2 - i dont have an option in bios to do this, is it important? my defualt FSB is 333mhz and my shows a speed of 667mhz. ive tryed increasing the FSB to 400 and it automatically doubles the ram speed to 800mhz.

when i increase the FSB windows wont boot. ive tryed increasing the cpu voltage control from its default setting of 1.31250v right up to 1.5 with no success. do i have to change any other voltage settings?

DDR2 over voltage control
PCI-E " " "
FSB " " "
(G) MCH " " "
CPU voltage control
normal CPU vcore = 1.31250v

these are the voltage options i have in bios.

yep your right, my FSB is currently at 333mhz and my system memory multiplier is set to auto which has the ram speed at double (667mhz).

if i increase the FSB can i just leave the mem multiplier on auto? and how about the voltage question i asked.

any help on this would be great

ive got my FSB currently set at 390 which puts my ram at 780mhz and things seem to be ok (havent changed voltage).

would i be right in sayin that if i OC the FSB some more that effectively means im OC'ing my ram as well which will involve increasing voltage? and out of all those 5 voltage settings i listed above, what ones do i need to increase?

the other question would be is there any way to OC the FSB while keepin the ram at its default clock speed (667mhz) or would that be defeating the purpose of OC'ing the FSB?

as i said, ive increased the FSB to 390 which has increased my cpu to 3200ghz but ive done a 3dmark06 benchmark and havent noticed any increase in performance.

i havent touched voltage or ram timings, do i need to alter those to see any increase in performance. my understandin is that i only need to increase voltage if the system becomes unstable/wont boot.

am i right about that? some advice bout setting ram timings would be great if that would help increase performance as well

hi,

i have managed to get the CPU to 3.2ghz without changin the voltage. my MB doesnt allow me to alter the fsb-ram ratio any less than 2:1 which means my ram runs at 780mhz. i dont see any performance increase with these settings when i run 3dmark06 though.

im startin to think there isnt much point in OC'ing my CPU as my ram is only meant to run at 667mhz, am i right about that?

ive also been lookin into my ram latency settings and it defaults at 5/5/5/15. do i have to alter these settings in order to OC my ram? i did try to set the ram to 3/3/3/12 but the system wont boot when i do that.

thanks for the response.
