Overclocking advice

Today is the day I delve into the world of overclocking.

Got an i5-3570k and a z77-d3h.

I've just bumped my multiplier up to 40 as a starting point and core temp is giving me a max temp of about 68c under load. I've also disabled the turbo boost thingy.

What sort of increments should I be using from here?

How long should I stress test for and which is the best test to use on prime95?

Is there any need to touch the voltages yet?
 
What cooler have you got?

If stock cooler, I would stay below 4.2GHz.

If other, 4.5Ghz would be a target to try for at standard volts.

An hour or two of prime set for max heat and power should do to test initial stability, then throw everything at it, IBT, 3Dmark, Heaven etc. concurrent testing.
 
Ok I'm up to 4.4 but 3dmark crashes on the combined test where it would continue whilst I was at 4.2.

Should I start to increase the volts now?
Are there any other settings I should be changing?

What temperatures were you getting on 3Dmark?

I would try running prime with HWmonitor open to check the temps.

You can up the vcore a notch or two but stay below 1.35.

Similarly PLL voltage seems to affect the OC, use up to 1.8V

There are plenty of posts on the CPU threads for settings.
 
I just ran 3dmark at 4.2 and max temp was 57c.

I'll go up to 4.3 and see what difference that makes.

Sleeping Dogs crashed after about 20 minutes at 4.4 too.

EDIT: Just tested @ 4.3 and 3dmark crashed again. Max temp only reached 47c. Any ideas?

Your core voltage will be too low. You're getting good temps so far so I wouldn't be worried about upping that a bit.

If you're running on standard, try increasing it a bit (set manually to say 1.26) and see how you go. Once you get it stable, you can slowly reduce the voltage, testing each time, until it crashes again. Then raise back until stable.

Basically, you'll have to increase it to overclock more, but you don't want the voltage higher than it needs to be :)

I need 1.3v to hold 4.5ghz on my 3770K, but I think my cooling may be to blame there... you might well get better!
