Ive had one of these for some time now, ive been considering OCing the CPU to get some more performance out of it. Its pretty straight forward with my motherboard so why not. Got a few questions though, as its been a long time since i overclocked any CPU's.

My CPU Seems to idle at around 38c and on full load hits about 52c i think. Its got a standard AMD Fan on it. Im wondering what kind of value's should i be worried about in terms of temp under load and what Heatsink/Fan would people recommend, and also what kind of speed should i expect to get this CPU up to.

What are you measuring the temps with?

And you really need another HSF, Ive had a Freezer64 Pro, and a Noctua nh-u12, and the freezer isnt really capable of cooling the DC.
 
Im using the Asus Probe software supplied with the Motherboard, again if something is more suitable and accurate any suggestions are welcome.
 
k ive downloaded that and will check tonight, work machine ha some nice temps though hehe, 32 / 31 on idle pretty much. In regards to the temps, if you where OCin the AMD Chip i mentioned what level would you hit and think .. okay thats too hot and im not going to clock further.
 
Ive had mine touch 70 and admittedly I started to panic a bit and stopped there.

Your goal is 3ghz, as is every air cooled a64.
 
**** your pumping 1.8 in to the chip !!! :eek: on air ?!?!?!?!?

i got bored one nite and pumped mine to 1.6 with water cooling, and managed to get an extra 40 mhz (ish) out of her !! ( x2 5200 AM2 chip )

have now underclocked her to 1.4 Ghz, as it's not mainly used for music and videos ( now i have a lovely lady, YES !!!!! at last :D )

Why would you need to run a 5200(2.6GHz)at 1.4GHz?
 
so i can stop the fans on the watercooling, turn the rest of the fans down, underclock the graphics cards, put some sexy music on and well .....:rolleyes:
 
seems a wast of a x2 5000+ why not let it be what its meant to be and that's
a 2.6 even at stock speeds its going to run temps around <40c load
got my x2 4200+ 285*11 1.5v hits the 3gig mark evo 120 air cooling
just had a look using core temp;
core 0: 29c
core 1: 35c
its like you bought a Lotus and turned it into a Robin reliant :confused:

Got my 5200(AM2)running at 2.8 GHz on stock volts(ram and cpu).
Ram is Crucial Ballistix 2Gb pair @ 4-4-4-12 2T.
Decent enough cooler that runs a max of 2000 rpm when needed but real quiet most of the time.
cpu temp around the 40-45c max under load

i run cpu per sig passive now (bong = gunk city) - house radiator, 700btu @ 50c was its rating. water temp about 33c loaded. very cheap, and best of both worlds ;)

on topic, most start to worry about temps at about 60c, so you have a way to go yet - see how far you can wind up the fsb before you start to get instabilities, (leave the voltages for now), without more v-core you should be ok upto say 2.7ghz befor you broke 60c. (thats not to say you can get 2.7, just for example)

only way to find out is to try it.

if you have your stepping that can help give an estimate of settings to use.
 
i do use it for gaming, and when i do i crank it up to 3 Ghz. i'd just rather underclock it when just running music or something that is light on CPU usage.
Fuel saver as it were.
 
Was fiddling around with my new 3800+ last night, have managed 2.7Ghz @ 1.4v, but I am getting load temps of 62-68ºC after much Orthos stress testing. :(

I'm using a Thermalright XP-90 with a Panaflo fan.
 
Have you got good air flow in the case ?
Also have a look for dust in the fins of the heatsink, i've got natural carpets in my flat, and i have to clean out the heatsink after about a week of running !!!
 
Case is P180, 120mm intake, 120mm exhaust, 90mm on the freshly cleaned XP-90

:(

Mebbe my application of the MX-2 went wrong, is the first time I have ever used it....
 
could just be a hot running chip.

Try reseating the cooler, if that doesn't help then maybe the chip or cooler being concave/convex.

But thats not very likely, i think, just going on what ppl on here say.
