Overclocking and Voltages?

Hi,

I've recently upgraded and want to try doing some clocking. :)

At the moment my 3000 Venice will hit 2.7ghz but some times it will freeze, obviously this isnt stable. With the stock volts already being around 1.58v, I know its high and bit dangerous to be playing with under a stock cooler.

Should I expect better stability under a better cooler? i.e Thermaltake Orb's, Zalman AeroFlower or Arctic Freezer 64 Pro.

You could get better temps, meaning higher volts, meaning better stability yes but a cooler alone will do nothing.

How are you testing stability?
Are you using a divider and are you lowering the htt multi?
Stock voltage is not 1.56.
What are your temps?

The only dangerous thing is overclocking and particularly overvolting when you don't know what your doing. make sure you understand how it all works, and if not ask or ask to be guided through it.
 
yes divider is at 133 to compensate for the overclock and the htt is at 2.

and im sorry i didnt make it clear but thats what i meant lower temps meaning more volts..

If your temps are the limiting factor currently then yes a new cooler will help and allow you to raise the volts more.

You should be using prime95 to test for stability properly rather than waiting for it to freeze.
 
i dont exactly wait for it to freeze but im not going to waste several hours on prime95.

i dont know that the temps are the limiting factor i just thought they may have been contributing to it.

the program i use for stability testing is OCCT as recommended for timesaving by my friend Benjo, which i run for around 20 minutes
 
ok after just checking the voltages in cpu-z and confirming in the bios the cpu voltage is only at 1.48v, but myself, Naffa and Benjo all saw it say 1.58v yesterday, though i am 100% certain we never changed the voltages at any point.

are there any other settings likely to change the voltages?
 
Could be an overvoltage option in the bios, more likely dodgy measuring. Mine flicks up and down all the time but i have a rough idea what it is.

OCCT is probably ok. Keep going until you are limited by temperatures or until the voltage gets too high. Then if you think theres plenty of voltage left (too high is about 1.6) then a new cooler would help.
 
cheers for the info, i've got it back at 2.7ghz but i've taken voltages off auto and set it manually to +0.075v it now shows as 1.54v. it is stable so far, had an issue earlier so i upped the voltages.

as for OCCT i ran that for 30minutes with no problems temps is not a prob it only reach 40 max and i know this thing has ran hotter, approx 45 no problem so i dont think it is to do with temps just yet.

but again thanks for the help, ill keep you posted.
