Hi all,

Im fairly new to all this overclocking so forgive me if im being a complete newbie in terms of understanding how to do this.

Im running:

Athlon II X2 240
GIGABYTE M61PME-S2P
2GB x2 DDR2 PC6400 800mhz
Asus EAH5770 CuCore
also stock CPU cooler.

Ive read that the X2s are a good start for overclocking and can handle a fair amount of clocking, and as everyone will agree its nice to have more for your money. The cpu seems to run fairly low around 30c on the standard stock coolers, and thats without the case fan going (disconnected as its noisy, although will connect if/when it gets hotter).

In the BIOS ive had a little play around changing a few things, ive taken off the cool n quiet feature so I can set the clocks to the stock rate of 200 x 14. Ive tried to increased the FSB clock to 201 x 14 but when I reboot it I get a message on boot up basically telling me "I dont like this setting, change me back!". I ignored this and tried to run windows anyway which tried to load and failed. I was thinking maybe I need to lower the RAM speed but not sure what I should set it to? Also the HT settings were on auto, not sure if I need to change those??

Generally, im alittle out of my depth but I think im close to discovering how to do it! If anyone has any tips / pointers I would greatly appreciate it. I did read the overclockers guide but think I just need a few pointers to get me going.

Cheers ;)

ok i think im getting somewhere by lowering the HT multiplier to 4x and increasing the reference clock. could only go upto 203 before getting an error message so may need to lower the memory divider.

The CPUs are good overclockers. Not too sure about your motherboard though.

Make sure your memory is ALWAYS below rated specs when testing for CPU overclock.

And make sure Hypertransport is not exceeded either.

Would be useful if we could see your BIOS screen somehow.

ill see if i can take some pics! im starting to think the motherboard wont be able to handle anything serious! let me sort out some pics first. brb

ok these are the best i can do at the mo, had to take on my phone and email them over cos i dont have a card reader!

ok memory adjustments etc:

had some probs with my athlon x4 at first, but then someone suggested increasing the North bridge and memory voltages a bit. maybe try 1 or 2 increment and see if you get any results.
now i have mine up to 3.4 on stock cooler.

hmmm i cant seem to get my anywhere near a decent overclock. i had a fiddle with the memory timings and that didnt go down to well, had to clear the cmos! ;(

make sure ur HT is about 2ghz, ur NB is higher than ur HT, ie about 2.2ghz
also u may hav to up the voltage, also make sure ur memory has not gone to high, u might hav to lower the multi, then u can start upping the FSB, or if u got a Black edition just dont bother and up the multiplier, u should easily get 3.4 ghz without changing the voltages, good luck and start experimenting!!!

yer they are at the rated level... but they are loose as they are on auto.. cant seem to work out what bits i need to actually change.

In the second picture, change it from auto to manual. Set the first four values to the rated amounts. Usually for 800Mhz its 4-4-4-12 if it was a good brand/pack. Might be 5-5-5-18 though.

Once you do that run memtest+, a program to veridy stability of the RAM at the rated speeds. Once thats out we can continue.
