hi everyone, new to the forum. can anybody tell me what the best tool for overclocking the 4870. at the moment i am using msi afterburner, but for some reason it wont let me go over 790/1100 which is the same as the ati ccc. Suggestions?

Search for how to unlock unofficial overclocking in MSI AB! :)

Can't remember off hand how to do this. I don't use it, since Rivatuner does it all for me... Software volt modding too ;) (via someone else's mod)

I can only get my Toxic Vapour X up to around 818 on the core though on default voltage... with a volt increase, around 830-840... Not really worth it, imo :/

thanks sircanealot, i'll try it when i get home. hopefully i can achieve around the same clock speed as you. at the moment i am using a thermalright t-rad2 with a 120mm fan.

E7400 @ 3.6 /1.43v, Powercolor 4870 1gb, Asus blitz formula

Take a look on google for software voltmods. I think I have a pretty bad core imo, so hopefully you'll have some more luck :)
If you don't have any luck finding a volt mod that works, post here again and I'll try and dig up the one I'm using... There's a few of them, and it always takes me a while to find it and I'm at college right now... ^^;;

You'll probably end up damaging your card and if you don't, you probably won't find any significant improvement anyway.

riva tuner was what i used for the 4850 4870 and 4890 that i had personally i would use that. got my 4890 up to 910/1200 with a good bump of volts cant remember what i managed with the 4870 though they both had been flashed with other bios's though

Look in the MSI install folder for a .cfg file, open it in Notepad, you will see an entry near the bottom for Unoffical Overclocking, currently set to 0, change it to 1, then restart MSI :)

I just use ati overdrive within the catalyst control centre. 800/1000 seems to do me fine for my usage. Would going beyond this even make much difference in terms of fps in games?
