Overclocking boot failure

Hello,

18 months ago I brought a pre overclocked system here and until recently it’s been running perfectly, however now it won’t boot with the overclock.

Symptoms:

Turning the system on I received the following error message:

The system had experienced boot failures because of overclocking or changes of voltage.

Last settings in BIOS setup may not coincide with current H/W states

Current CPU Speed: 2.80GHz
Current BCLK: 133Mhz
Current Memory Speed: 1066MHz

Going back into bios saving and exiting causes the system to not boot requring a reset, and then display the message on the following boot.

If I just boot after the error message the system functions normally EXCEPT RAM is only displayed as 4GB on the POST screen and in windows 6GB installed with 4GB available.

Apart from turning off hyper threading and adding an extra hard drive and a second SDD the system is exactly how I brought it. I havent touched the overclocking settings, the normally overclock is 4GHz.

Any help appreciated.

Might be worth running Memtest86 if some of your RAM isn't showing up. You need to download it and create a bootable disk. Leave it running for a couple of hours and you'll know if it's a memory problem or not.

I think I have found the problem.

I pulled out a memory stick and managed to restore the overclock and boot with 4GB of ram.

By swapping the sticks I have figured out its the DDR3_5 slot on the motherboard causing the problem. Running any two of the sticks in DDR3_1 or DDR3_3 results in a normal boot with the overclock and the full 4 GB showing in windows.

Ive done some research and the problem seans to be either a duff motherboard or CPU pins bend.

I guess CPU pins being bend usually happens during install so its strange, unless my very tall and horizontal cpu cooler has put some force on the pins somehow.

If i pop the CPU will i need to replace the thermal paste?

No way you can have bent the pins with the CPU in place. If you do decide to take a look, you'll need new thermal paste.

Nothing you can do about a blown memory slot, except live with dual channel RAM or replace the motherboard :(

Thanks for the replys,

Searching on here it looks like theres a 3 year warranty on the board and a service centre in Milton Keynes. On monday I will give them a call and see what they say.

If they want me to post the board back I guess I will have to remove the CPU and reinstall it anyway so any recomendations on thermal paste?

No particular advice on paste. Make sure you note down your bios settings before sending the board off though or you'll lose your overclock.
