I am now at a stage with my current i5-2500k build to which im unsure as to what to do and am in need of some advice/guidance.

2 and a half years ago now, I bought a Asus P8P67 B3 revision motherboard running bios version 1305, a i5-2500k running at stock 3.3ghz and G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz memory. All is running fine, its never been overclocked, but bought thinking if I need to I can.

Well im now at stage in thinking with the newer sockets available on motherboard perhaps I need to stretch my current build a little. I only game on the system, the majority being Football Manager and Supreme Commander Forged Alliance which even being 5 years old is very CPU intensive. I do play other games occasionally, but no video, photo or music editing.

So with that in mind do I

1) Buy a i5 3570k ivybridge (the latest chip the mboard can handle) that will give me a small increase and when the time comes overclock. meaning upgrading the current bios

2) Buy a i7 2600k before they dissappear completely (they are still available... just) that gain will give me a small increase and overclock when the time comes. no bios upgrade needed. Will the i7 be more advantageous for Forged Alliance?

3) keep the i5 2500k and start simple overclocking now.

Now I havent overclocked since the old AMD Athlon processors, but from what ive seen it seems easier, just change the multiplier from x33 on all cores to 40 if I want a 4ghz overclock and keep stock voltages as no need to change on a small overclock, is this true?

Your thoughts please.

3) keep the i5 2500k and start overclocking the proverbials off it.

100% this. :D

My 2500k is still going strong, im not even thinking about upgrading it for maybe another 2 years now.

A good investment would be a good aftermarket cooler, if you don't already have one..

Yes, its as simple as changing the multiplier and adjust the voltage to suit (4-4.2ghz and above)..

You just need to keep an eye on temps.. I don't like mine going over 65C but 80C is the safe limit.
