Morning all. Got my e8400 and new motherboard, an Asus P5E so now want to play around a bit.

I remember people saying how these e8400 should be able to do 3.6ghz (400fsb) on stock (or around) volts. Now, unlike my gigabyte p35-ds3p, the asus bios does not tell me what the stock volts are, just that its 'auto'. On auto at stock speed cpu-z is reading off smack on 1.2v.

Just to see what would happen, I set the fsb to 400 while still keeping volts on auto, at which point the motherboard kindly upped the volts to 1.378v. So, do I now try setting the volts to 1.2 and seeing what I can get to? Is 1.378v safe to run at? Do you reckon I can even hit 3.6ghz on 1.2v?

I ain't totally new to this, just a new motherboard that doesn't quite help as much as the old one!

i would start at stock clocks and 1.2 volts and run intel burn test or something similar for 30mins and if its stable take it down a notch and keep going untill it fails then up it once then youve got your stock lowest voltage then work the fsb up from there?

or if your not bothered about what volts it should be stock then set it to 1.2 and do the same thing but raising the fsb and keep testing untill it fails then once its failed either up the volts or lower the fsb dependant on what you want to achieve

Couple of extra things:

Ran Intel Burn Test thingy and CPU Z reported dropping the voltage to 1.176v when it was running at 100%?!?!? What?!

Core Temp 0.97.1 reports a VID of 1.1125v. Whats that?

And finally, is my cpu running a bit too hot? 42c idle and about 62 load...may not of put cooler back on properly....
