Well it has been quite a few years since I did any serious overclocking so I am completely rusty again now.

I am trying to overclock my EvGA 680i but it seems that when I change settings and save it it doesn't seem to work.

For example I have the settings in advanced settings set to unlinked so that the FSB can be adjusted. I had to increase the multiplier from 6 to 8x just so that it would run the cpu at it's stock value of 2.66 Ghz. If I adjust the FSB it saves it but when I run cpu z the settings are still at stock value.

In the bios I noticed that there were 2 columns. First column which is the column that allows you to change is called settings at the top and no problem adjusting. The second column shows as current value which does not change whatever I do.

I have disabled speedstep & CIE.

Is there other settings that I need to disable too? I did update the Bios to the latest within Nvidia's control panel and it seemed fine.

I have also noticed that when I boot each time I have to press F1 and I believe this is because it is not running at stock values. Does this mean I will always have to press F1 each time that I boot?

Thanks in advance for looking.

Hi mate. The board you have has issues overclocking 45nm quad cores. Have you tried googling to see if anybody else with a similar setup has managed?
If you really want faster clock speeds you will be better of selling your q9400 and get a q6600 (do).

I have tried all sorts to overclock this Q9400 but it just becomes unstable. I have had the cpu voltage up to 1.3volts.

Could anyone advise please?

I have turned the multiplier down to x6 and adjusted the fsb and increased the multiplier. I am sure it is the voltage but I don't know what is safe with these processors.

Unfortunatley its the chipset, the 650i\80i just doesn't like overclocking quads. I cant get my q6600 above 2.9 without it throwing a hissy fit :) Theres quite a long thread on it on the nvidia forums.

680i does not support 45nm quads so you are lucky it works at all. Try using only 2 sticks of RAM when you over clock it. If I was you I would look for a cheap P45 or x48 motherboard.
