overclocking Graphics cards

Is it really worth overclocking a GPU? The few percent gain hardly makes a difference to general gaming. Getting an average of 38 FPS as opposed to 35FPS has no significant benefit surely, and that's what you'd gain from a 10% overclock, which is on average more than what most would get I think. (I get the feeling I'm potentially about to be proved wrong).
With a CPU the benefits of overclocking are noticeable, especially when you are talking 30-50% plus.

Playing devils advocate a little here, and hope someone can prove me wrong. Have dabbled with overclocking my GPU a little using Ntune, but as I couldn't visually see a difference I reverted back to stock settings, and just changed the cooler for a quieter option. Now less fan noise does make a difference to the gaming experience!

Dude - I am so sorry - I take it all back - it seems that the powers that be have de-stickied it, not sure why, was hugely useful and would have made a good starting point for an updated thread for all ATi overclocking. Anyway, the thread I was referring to is here

Hope that helps.

As far as 'worth' is concerned, I found that I was able to gain a 'noticeable' improvement from my x1900 MC using his techniques that took oblivion from jerky to smooth - so for me it was worth it. It's not just about the GFX card, but a few percent here and a few percent there soon adds up, the big thing though is price. By overclocking your card you can achieve performance that usually only comes from owning a much more expensive card (8800 GT/GTS/GTX/Ultra) - so while it may only give a small increase (10-30%) it means you have effectively saved between £50-£200, certainly makes me feel better :)
