Hey Peeps,

Just got me a new HD4890. Upgraded from a 320 meg 8800 GTS and the differnece is amazing. Crysis flies on full settings. And even GTA IV is working perfect on full settings.

I've never tried to overclock at GFX card before but would like to give it a go on as I read in reviews this one can go quite a bit. I recently overclocked my my CPU to 3.3 ( Q6600 ) and Ram at 1100mhz ( 8 gig OCZ Gold ) on a P5Q Pro.

I really don't know where to start so if anyone could give me some pointers that would be ace.

I have a XFX HD4980 ( not the overclocked edition as I wanted to do it myself )

Thanks,

Kev

The link you sent me is really good, I'm running it right now and slowly pushing it up. Temps about 75 - 76 on stock, about the same with 10mhz increase on core. The link doesn't really say how long to test it for i've been doing it for about 3 mins and seeing what it levels out at. Do you think that's long enough as when overclocking cpu on prime it's best to be left for 20mins or so ???

Thanks again,

Kev

Thanks for the quick reply mate. Well i'm pusing it up slowly but surely with riva tuner. I'm planing on doing test for 10 mins at a time to see what the temp is saying and when it hits about 85oc I was gonna leave it at that as it says in the article that 90 is not a good temp to have it at. Do you think i'll be safe enough doing that or do you think I should run it for longer, when it hits 85 I was gonna do a full test as you say for about 30 mins. Once in done with the core I was gonna push memory up much the same way.

Another thing, there is nothing in the article about fan speeds so this is just running on whatever it's set to stock. I'm not sure if the fan will auto adjust to temps ?

i'm hoping to get out like 950mhz core and 4600mhz on the ram like it says in the article. This is my first time messing about with a GPU and don't really wanna see smoke as I just spent an arm n leg on it. What would you expect to be a decent OC from it. Think i'm hoping for too much and also what happens if I do push this too farr, will it fry or just reset ?

Thanks Again,

Kev

Not at all man, i'm really not sure either. That was probably gonna be my next question tho. I was kinda under the impression as it's basically a HD4870 that any aftermarket cooler that would fit one of them would probably do a HD4890. No really sure tho will have to look about. I want to see more people overclocking their HD4890 so I can know a bit more to expect tho.

Meh 930mhz on core looks to be my max. Getting slight gaphical glitches on furmark so leaing it at 930mhz until I get a better cooler. Gonna try pushing ram now. Still considering it was £20 more for the pre overclocked XFX I have this running faster than it's core of 875mhz so why bother buying one of them eh.
