Hi, basically I'm trying to get my Q6600 stable at 3.6ghz. My system is:-

Asus P5K Premium
Q6600 G0 @ 3.2Ghz @ 1.3v
Themeralright Ultra Extreme (neither the cpu or h/s have been lapped)
4GB Dominators @ 1066 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1
Upped the N/B voltage by 1 notch due to 4GB ram.
HX620
Antec 900

I'm currently stuck at 3.2, and I don't know anything about most of the options in the bios. I have seen people post pictures of their bios showing their settings (I'm aware that some chips need more vcore than others etc), and I would appreciate if people posted their settings to help me get to 3.6Ghz.

Thanks

I have a P5Kc mobo, but apart from that have reasonably similar spec to you, and am also new to overclocking. I too am having trouble with anything over 3.2 ( i hoped paying extra for water cooled might help, but it appears not)

I got the following settings from another post which i tried last night:

Settings are

JumperFree Configuration Settings
AI Overclocking: Manual
CPU Ratio Control: Manual
- Ratio CMOS Setting: 9
FSB Frequency: 407
PCI-E Frequency: 101
DRAM Frequency: 814
DRAM Timing Control: Manual
CAS# Latency: 5
RAS# to CAS# Delay: 5
RAS# Precharge: 5
RAS# Activate to Precharge: 15
TWR: AUTO
TRFC: AUTO
TWTR: AUTO
TRRD: AUTO
TRTP: AUTO
DRAM Static Read Control: Disabled

Transaction Booster: Disabled
Boost Level: 0
Clock Over-Charging Mode: AUTO

CPU Spread Spectrum: Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum: Disabled
CPU Voltage: 1.55
CPU Voltage Reference: AUTO
CPU Voltage Damper: ENABLED
CPU PLL Voltage: Auto
DRAM Voltage: 2.3
FSB Termination Voltage: 1.4
North Bridge Voltage: 1.25
North Bridge Voltage Reference: AUTO
South Bridge Voltage: AUTO

Advance CPU Settings
CPU Ratio Control: Manual
- Ratio CMOS Setting: 9
C1E Suppport: Disabled
Max CPUID Value Limit: Disabled
Vanderpool Technology: Disabled
CPU TM Function: Disabled
Execute Disable Bit: Disabled
PECI: Enabled

However it wasnt exactly stable.

I also tried with fsb at 445 and multiplier at 8 but this also didnt work too well.

I left it at 425 x 8 in the end which gave me 3.4ghz, and it didnt bsod although that was at 12.30 last night to i didnt do much testing.

Maybe changing some of the other configs (RAM timings, volts etc.) might help, but as i am new to this and dont know what i am doing, i dont really know where to start.

If you try any of this please let me know how you get on as i would like to try and get around 3.6 from my q6600 as well

regards

Craig

Same setup here but with 4gb ballistix 800mhz ram

Everything at stock apart from

Fsb - 400
Multi- x9
vcore - 1.45
Ram - 800

Gives me 3.6 no probs

Craig, 1.55 vcore seems a bit high . Yep same as you I'm wanting the magical 3.6@1600fsb.

@ TheBug - Could you tell me you cpu VID and the temps your getting with your TRUE?

Same setup here but with 4gb ballistix 800mhz ram

Fsb - 400
Multi- x9
vcore - 1.45
Ram - 800

I have seen load of people with those sort of settings however for me those just aren't stable:mad:

It was like that for me with 3.2

fsb - 400
multi - 8
vcore - 1.30
ram - 1066

Solid as a rock, anything over isn't stable.

Guess I'll be having a tinker over the weekend

Cheers all

Should all be in this screenie

Tried getting anywhere near The Bugs settings, but my system wont have a bit of it, wont even get as far as windows. My P5kC or RAM not up to it i suppose??

If i am looking like frying something here could someone please tell me.

Am i suffering from vdroop (only first heard of this yesterday so dont laugh if i am chatting crap)

Tried 380 x 9 to give me 3.42 with the core voltage set to 1.5 in the BIOS, cant remeber quite what this read in CPU-Z but it was quite a bit less. Ran a stability test against and watched the core voltage drop to something like 1.35 whe CPU under load, at which point it blue screened.

I have now upped the core voltage in the BIOS to 1.55 (somebody please say if this is too high). This is reported as 1.488 in Bios at idle and then drops to 1.4 under load. Have been running a test against it for 30 mins now and still going.

Temps are around 47 degrees C

Does this seem ok to you OC Masters??

V-core seems high for that oc but if thats what the chip needs just make sure its got good cooling.

I found that most of my blue screens was caused by memory voltages/timings, and my machine would just lock up if it was a Cpu / v-core problem.

What voltage are you running the ram at?

Also you could do the v-droop pencil mod - it does work as i did it on my P5B Deluxe

My RAM is XM2X1024 PC2 6400 800mhz memory, which the website says should run at 1.8v 5-5-5-18. Whats the score with running it ay something different??

Have noticed today that with the system overclocked apps seem to be crashing more (xxx has stoped responding and needs to exit kind of message). Is this likely to be a bi-product of overclocking?? I have not had the system long and am running x64 so maybe its nothing to do with overclocking and more to do with xp64, any thoughts????

Thanks

Craig

Please can you tell me what you adjusted in the BIOS to get 3.4. I an no back down to 3.2 but really want to go higher. The CPU is water cooled and temps dont seem to be a problem.

THX

Cheers for the screenie TheBug, shall play abit at the weekend. I was getting bsod, so I will try adjusting my ram a bit and report back.

Good luck parxuk:)

Yeah thx, you too. Hope you dont think i have hijacked yor thread or anything. Just seems ideal as we are both newbies trying to achieve the same.

Dont fancy my chances though, spent a long time experimenting tonight and i am back at 3.2 (bugger).

Can your operating system have an effect on the success of an overclock???

I have a P5KC too (although i only have a E6300). My board was really unstable because of the onboard lan, try overclocking with the lan disabled (in bios). I would get random lock ups even though prime was running ok. I noticed when i got to high fsb's i it would constantly say 'cable disconnected' for a second so i disabled it and it worked.

oh and newest bios worked a treat for me too it was unstable at 485fsb with old bios (0701) no matter what voltages i chose, with the new bios i am stable at 500 even with transaction booster set to +3 (bios 1105). (just please make sure your pc is stable/stock settings before flashing bios)

From what you have put in post #3 in this thread i would try the following...

I would also leave transaction booster set to auto for now (on disable i got memtest errors for some strange reason)
Ram voltage is too high imo, I would stick with max 2.2v for the moment (although you should not even need it that high for the speed your running your ram at.)

DRAM Static Read Control: Just left this on auto as it made little difference for me.

OK noob newbie question here, i only got the new system last week, how/whats the best way to update the BIOS please???

if your not sure i would say your best leaving it... i would only really do this if the other things i mentioned have not worked.

But if you want to have a go anyway, i would say asus update will be best for you. (its on your CD under utilities tab)

you MUST make sure your pc is stable (stock will be best) because if it crashes or the power cuts out etc, you have a dead board.

It takes a long time to flash and you cant move the mouse and nothing will happen so you get the feeling its crashed, but just leave it for a few mins and it will complete.

restart your pc when asus update promts you to and all your settings will be back at default so its like starting again.

Thanks for that, i was actually just in the process of reading the manual, which i probably should have done last week anyway. Havent installed any of the ASUS utilities yet so i shall load it tonight and give it a whirl (having set the bios back to standard first!)

Thx for the advice
