Overclocking Help

ok where do i start . I not a noob so to speak with computers. I am good with most areas and most things with computers. i can build Pc's and do lots of othings things BUT ........

For the life of me dont know how to overclock manualy.

I never done it before. everything about it baffles me. I guess the biggest problem is I am scarred of damaging my pc and it not working and after i just thrown and hell a lot of money at it i dont want to do that now hehe .

My specs are;

-i7 980X
-Gigabyte UD9 mobo
-Kingston HyperX 2000mhz 6gb mem Tripple channel ((3x2gb))
-Crucial c300 256gb SATA 3 SSD
-5970 XFX ATI 2gb
-Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler With 2x sharkoon slient eagle SE fans in push and pull
-1000w corsair psu modular
-Lian Li PC-P80B Armorsuit Aluminium Super Tower Case

Now i getting my pc back tomorrow ((psu blew so had to rma a few stuff for testing)) and putting it together. before my psu blew and i had to rma my pc was running at roughly 3.5ghz ((with turbo boost on)) and 1333mhz mem .

I want to Overclock to about 4ghz cpu and 2000mhz mem . Now the XMP on my mem overclocks my mem to the 2000mhz should i use that then over clock the cpu or???

Like i said i have no clue what i should do and would love the help to get this pc up and running to 4ghz.

You really want to know how to over-clock with kit like that? You are kidding me right.

Mate that is extreme bencher territory and not n00b overclocker. But hell that is what you got so lets go for it.

First - not a good idea to use the XMP. Why you ask. Simple the XMP was designed with a non-Gulftown processor. The IMC in the Gulftown (that is the CPU you have mate) is not the same as other CPU's that can fit into the 1366 socket motherboard.

So you have to make the call. Multi or BLK. By that I mean what route do you want to go to clock your CPU to 4GHz.

The easy way is to set you BLK to 200 and your ram ratio to 2:10. Done deal.

If it is as easy as that then you have a really good CPU and you are one lucky chap.

Hard way is to find what the optimum balance between BLK/multi and voltage is.

BLK 133 x Multi 30 = 4GHz
BLK 200 x Multi 20 = 4GHz

You can do the maths for the others between those two mulits.

That is CPU to 4GHz sorted. Leave voltages on all auto at this point.


Memory.
Your un-core only needs to be 1.5 x the memory frequency unlike other X58 chipset CPU's which need to be at least 2 x memory frequency.

Once you have decided what your BLK will be then you forget about the multi and just get your ram sorted. To do that you check out the different ratio's you have. The most simple on is 2:10 but the others will work for lower BLK settings. That you will have to check out. Change your memory voltage to the 1.65 that it is spec'ed to run at.
