I'm trying to over clock my pc for the first time, using this guide http://www.techreaction.net/2010/09/07/3-step-overclocking-guide-lynnfield/3/

My system is:

Intel core i5 750
Coolermaster Mystique case
Coolermaster hyper 212 plus with push-pull fan config
Shin-etsu g751 thermal paste
Fans at front and rear (Scythe Gentle Typhoon at rear)

So far I have followed "Step 1" - set CPU clock ratio to x15, set memory ratio to 6, set QPI/Vtt to 1.2v and increased clock frequency to 180. My CPU is at 2.7GHz.

I've used IntelBurnTest to test stability, and it has passed so far. However the temperatures in RealTemp are reaching 80c at max load! This seems too high to me? Especially since I haven't even increase VCore or anything yet.

Could it be that the cooler isn't seated properly? Anyone know the best way to apply shin etsu thermal paste?

Just tested temps at stock speed - 65c at max load in intelburntest.

Definitely try re-seating, those temps aren't right. I don't know that specific paste but what i do is put a blob of paste in the middle, like a fat grain of rice size and use a credit card to spread it evenly. Some use cling film over their finger to spread it.

Try re-seating and I would put a small blob of paste about the size of a pea and allow the coolers heatsink to spread the paste. Sometimes too much paste can cause a negative effect - higher temps. A lot of people spread paste onto the CPU, I allow the HS to do it.

Well I tried reseating the cooler - removed thermal paste, applied small blob on cpu and spread with heatsink. After two attempts (I used less paste the second time) it has made no difference :(

Have you manually adjusted the vcore? if you leave it on auto then it could be unnecessarily high, more volts = more heat.
