Hey guys,

Im relatively new to the PC and hardware world, thinking just months ago i would have no idea what a GPU or PSU is! :P

Luckily thats changed with me persuing my PC building, and my research has greatly helped everything, however there is one thing i have never understood. Overclocking.

I know WHAT it is, and that a lot of things can be overclocked, like the CPU, GPU, RAM ect. But i just don't know HOW it is done.

With CPU's, i know one way is by changing the 'multiplier' in BIOS is one way, but what other ways are there?/Better ect.

Also how do you overclock your GPU?

Can you use certain programs, is it all done in BIOS, can you tamper with them?

Sorry :P

Thanks!

For overclocking your GPU, you should look no further than MSI afterburner. There are plenty of helpful videos out there, including

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV2juRPEEBg&feature=fvst

It shows how to overclock it and then put it under full load to check whether it is or stable or not.

I also think that, in terms of CPU overclocking, that achieving them through BIOS is the most reliable way. Some motherboards do come with software that allows you to have a better, perhaps more helpful BIOS interface.

Found a CPU overclocking video by the same bloke!

Thanks! :D

Ill check them out straight away :D

Also 1 question...

Can you overclock any CPU (modern ones, like the i3's+) via BIOS or w/e?

I don't think it just comes down to the CPU, you'll also need a motherboard that allows you to overclock (or at least to significant ammounts). I believe the Z68 and P67 boards are the kind you're after for overclocking.

The processor is also very important of course! If you do want to overclock and you're going with Intel's more modern CPUs, look for the K series of CPUs, the K meaning unlocked - in other words, they are great for overclocking to your needs! That is not to say however that they are the only kind that overclock, they are just optimised for it!

So an i3-2100 could still be overclocked?
