Overclocking issue

Hey all, not sure what the issue is exactly so put this in general, i suspect it's a power supply issue but here goes.

been playing on my Rv520 laptop recently,
It runs 8gb ram, i5-2410m duel core and an nvidia gt520m graphics card,

When playing an intensive game like H1Z1, I'm getting frame drop and i've figured out why...
I always noticed the screen would flicker between dim and light, and I worked out this is the battery, I think the game is too intensive and is using up all of the available power, so much so that it does not have enough to constantly charge the battery, therefore it flicks between high performance and power saving mode (i've also tried it on balanced and i get the same outcome.

I realised this when I overclocked my graphics card using Nvidia inspector, I overclocked it from 740mhz to 800mhz, which increased my frames on medium settings to 40 consistent from 25-30, But It was not until my laptop flagged up saying 10% left i realised it was actually too powerful (i think thats the issue anyway)

I then put the settings back to stock, applying the defaults, which did not cure the now constant flicking from battery to mains, I then done a system restore to an update i made 3 days ago, but this has still not fixed the issue, It's flicking between battery and mains just as much now as it was when It was overclocked!!!

It's fine in any task apart from intense games, Heat is not an issue, Without my cooling mat i'm consistent at 55c with overclocking, with the cooling mat i'm sat at 45-49c consistently.

Is it just the power to the laptop that is not enough? the stock charger is 19v

Before overclocking, I could play for a few hours and only lose 2% battery from it switching to battery power for a second or 2 periodically,

Since overclocking (and then returning back to stocks) I played for 30 minutes and was down to 67%!!!

any advice? This laptop was bought in germany and has a 2 pin to 3 pin plug adapter on the end, could this be bottlenecking the power supply? or do I need a more powerful charger?

any advice is welcome,

Lee

how old is the laptop? it could be that the battery might need replacing but would depend on how old the laptop is if its failing to hold its charge or draining too quickly.

Hey ED thanks for the quick reply, charge lasts around 2-3 hours dependant on use, laptop is 3 years old! so shouldnt be an issue really, it's only when gaming that it becomes and issue, It did flick between battery and mains BEFORE overclocking, every 5 mins or something it would do it then go back to mains...

Since overclocking and going back to stocks, it spends 95% of the time on battery power.

Bump -

The issue with it flicking between battery/mains since reverting back to stock speeds has gone, but i'd love to overclock it again, my fames at medium-high jumped by 20 frames just with a 60mhz increase, so i'd love to be able to solve this issue.

maybe try with a 30mhz overclock and see if it does the same thing.

I haven't had any dealings with gaming laptops so my knowledge is limited but will try and help out.

I don't know if this is possible or not but is there any options to disable the power saving mode to see if this stops the issue?

Thankyou for your help,

I've overclocked by 30mhz and this is how it went

As soon as I overclocked I got "Plugged in, not charging"
I tried a simple calibration of the battery (take out battery, Uninstall drivers for battery, Turn off, install battery, turn on, let drivers reinstall)

no change, Although it said "plugged in not charging" the battery was not going down, So i tried to play the game.

I play in full screen windowed so I can tab out and check the battery easy.

First 5 minutes - No dimming of the screen, playing on high performance battery mode, plugged in not charging.

After 5 minutes - Dimming of screen, Now only flicking between battery and mains.

seems odd that it says (plugged in not charging, Yet the screen gets brighter? as if it is...)

after 7-8 minutes, flickering between increases to every few seconds, battery losing charge, now flicking between battery and "plugged in, charging"

Closed game, "plugged in charging" - not changed since closing game.

It just seems like the power to the laptop is not enough to run the overclocked card AND charge the laptop up, I've even tried overclocking by 10mhz with the same outcome.

I'm scratching my head!

i5 2410 = 35 watts.
GT 520 = 17 watts.

PSU brick rating = ? watts

l am assuming brick is either 60 or 65 watts if so overclocking will tax the PSU brick too much causing system to behave as it is.

Might be worth investing in a new 90 watt PSU or greater.

Age may also degrade the existing PSU.
