I am new to overclocking and would like to try and overclock my Phenom II 940,

Would you say the easier way for me to do it is with AMD over drive?

Definatly not, always overclock in the BIOS.

Windows based overclocking tools are only ever useful for graphics overclocking. CPU and NB overclocking they are terrible. I'd highly recommend not doing it.

I've always failed miserably with overclocking, but today i got bored and gave AMD Overdrive another go and it got my 940 up to 3.7 and seems to be very stable and bizarely is idling at 30° ... same as before i started

How can a program which sets your cores to 100% whilst gradually increasing the clock values until it reaches it's limit be a bad idea?

Doing it in the Bios is the norm, but you have no idea how it will handle once you get to the os.. which can be a total pain in the backside

Im finding AMD Overdrive hard to fault, what isn't good about it?

I used to own the 940 and have to say I actually quite liked Overdrive.

I personally never used the automatic tuning feature, frankly due to being too impatient. But What i did find useful was using the more manual features, which allows you to set multi, Vcore etc whilst in windows. I would then run the built in stabilty test (which to be honest isn't much use, was just a way of seeing if altering the BIOS was worth it)

Managed to get a nice stable 3.8 O/c out of it, which I found via Overdrive, set up via BIOS.

I have to agree with NathWraith. I have the same chip as you and it's quite easy to overclock just by increasing the multiplier, I found Dolks guide good info.

Clocking a 940 is pretty simple really. You can clock it pretty much guaranteed to 3.4 and possibly 3.6 with just upping the multi in the bios on stock volts. I currently have mine at 3.6 and will go a bit higher at a later date.

I prefer to do it from the bios. As pooley says Dolks guide has great info in it. Google it as thats where I got my info from after switching back from intel.

Well I've changed the settings in the bios now as it seems to be stable.

If you want to get to 3.7 try: Voltage 1.45, Multiplier 18.5, FSB 201
