Overclocking my e4300

I just picked up a new e4300 and an Asrock dual 4core vsta mobo. I'm using old DDR333 ram at the moment until can get some new DDR2 at the end of the month.

Can I still overclock my machine using the current DDR ram? If I set my Ram to 133 in the bios could I then up the FSB until my ram is at 166?
 
Although I don't have that mobo & CPU, my understanding is that you can clock your RAM below it's normal speed then clock it back up to it's rated speed with the FSB, exactly as you describe. As far as I know this is true for overclocking with dividers in general.
 
Man I always manage to fluff it... I have a gig of DDR333 sitting here and had my OC at 2.4ghz stable. I thought I'd get a better OC with the DDR2 800, I bought it from my local PC store so hopefully I can take it back for a refund and get something a bit more useful.

How did you mange fsb of 266 without the PCI lock on this board? thought anything aover 33mhx incrase made this board unstable because there's no PCI lock :confused:
 
Good news, I managed to return my 800mhz Ram so It looks like the £70 notes is now buying me a nice new Trackir system. Yay :)

It could be that I have the 4core VSTA board?. I read that some people couldn't clock the Dual VSTA very well without updating the Bios first.



Here's what I changed in the bios for my current OC which is stable at 2431mhz with my Ram running at 168mhz stock cooling and voltage.




Overclock Mode - CPU,PCIE Async.
CPUFr. - 270
PCIE Fr. - 101 (only 1mhz diff but apparently helps stablize overclock)
Spread Spectrum - Disabled
Boot Failure - Disabled

Max CPUID Val. - Disabled
Intel Virtuali. - Disabled
CPU Thermal Thr. - Disabled
No-Execute Memory. - Disabled
Intel Speedstep - Disabled

Chipset:

Dram Freque. - 166
Flexib.- Disabled
AGP Voltage - HIGH (Even if using PCI-e apparently helps with overclock)

Not yet mate but I will once I get my head round the memory timings and such, this is my first time overclocking and I'm not 100% sure how to advance from here. My system is stable at its current 2.4 because my Ram is sitting at it's native speed, I know that much.

If I push further I'll probably have to OC my Ram and loosen timings and up the voltage on it, and to be honest I'm still not sure how to do that. I'll spend a bit more time and once I completely understand what I'm doing and why I'm doing it I'll push on a bit further :)
 
It's just some standard Dane-elec ram I bought Ages ago. I did a quick search on it and some people seem to be able to clock it, one guys got it up to 196mhz and another guy got it up to 216mhz so It might allow me to get my FSB up a bit more. At the moment my machine gets into windos at 2.64ghz but falls down once I start up superprime, thats without changing my memory settings or voltage.
 
Right, I'm getting that combo soon then, I think I should be able to get mine to 2.7 with a few tweaks, think 3Ghz would be pushing my luck tho

Will couple it with a nice PCI-e 7600gt and a nice raptor or two

or maybe a nice 8800gts 320Mb
 
It's definately a good combo for a budget upgrade that will get you a lot of performance. I was reading over at another forum that people are getting 3.4ghz+ with this combo with a small voltmod.

I bought an x1950 pro to go in my machine as I only use it for driving and flight sims at 1280x720 resolutions on my projector or 1280x1024 on my monitor so I can crank everything right up as well as 6xAA 16xAF
 
hi im currently running an x24400 at stock speed

was thinking of upgrading to this board and an e4300 , what sort of overclocks can i expect to see?

i was thinking of using my old ddr400 geil ram

would this be quicker than my current set up?

ps i dont game
