Overclocking my GPU what does artefacting in games tell me?

Hi guys I am overclocking both my memory and core clocks on my GPU and had been getting game crashes until I increased the voltage what but I am getting artefacting what does this tell me about my OC? too much voltage? or have I just reached the limit of how much I can OC?
 
Pretty sure ram overclocked too high will cause a crash, where as GPU clock going too high causes artifacts to appear. You would either need more voltage or drop down the GPU clock slightly.

I've found it to be the other way around, where too high a GPU overclock just causes a driver crash, whilst VRAM overclocks cause artifacting. The crappy Elpida memory on my 780 won't do anything more than +100MHz before I start getting sparkling artifacts in certain games (MGS V was one that'd trigger it every time).

Pushing my GPU too high just results in a hard lock and crash to desktop.
 
Artefacts don't necessarily narrow it down to VRAM or core - though when you gets dots and/or corrupt text it is more likely to be VRAM (in the case of random dots on the screen almost certainly VRAM) things like extruded polygons, etc. can be both. Black screens, driver crashing, etc. can be due to both.

Don't bother with VRAM overclocking initially - outside of a few benchmarks it doesn't have that big an impact in most games - get your core clock up and tested first and once you find out how high that will go see how much the VRAM will go with that core clock.

I have had a crash to desktop with GPU core overclocking, but I have had full system crashes with black screen when overclocking memory too much.

Only memory related issues I have had with visible squares (not the same as normal overclocking artifacts from the core) all over my screen is when the memory is completely borked for non overclocking reasons.

Are you talking normal system RAM or graphics card VRAM? I've never experienced a full system lockup from overclocking VRAM.

RAM overclocked too high will artifact or if it is much too high, black screen. The core clocked too high will result in a crash. VRAM clocked too high can take the form of black/grey triangles/corrupt textures/pretty disco lights.
