Iv spent to much on my pc. 2 graphic cards over the years, gone through lots of ram sticks, external hd which all adds up to £700 ish now iv gotton to the point where if i wanna change my processor ill need to change my motherboard and probly aload of other things. I dont have the money to do that.
So i was just wondering. Would it be possible to send my computer down to the OC shop and yous can overclock it for me? i have no clue what to do and i dont wanna make it slower. The pc is good at playing games and has a fare ammount of storage but. On start up it is UTTERLY SLOW. Iv checked for viruses with 2 programs and i find nothing.
Some days i could go away for a cup of tea and come abck and its still trying to start up or even log me in.. Iv tried numerous things like disk defragmenting, removing a lot of startup programs etc but nothing seems to work.

theres my pc spec.

Would it be possible for me to send my pc down to your shop so you can overclock it? How much will it cost? I really dont want new parts cause i cant afford it lol.

If its slow on start up your best bet is to reformat HDD and start from scratch with a fresh install of your OS. OC'ing wont really help you here. If you want to OC go have a read of the sticlies in the OC forum, they'll teach you the basics, its really quite easy to do yourself. If you get stuck people will be more than willing to help you on here, but you'll need to post your full system specs so they know where to point you

i dont really want to reformat my HD. Would buying a newone and replaceing old do the same job?
I wouldnt mind paying £60-70 for a 500gig hd if it would help

It would, but you still need to re-install the OS to get rid of the garbage that accumulates over time. If it's really taking a long time you might try unplugging all USB stuff (hubs, devices) other than essential ones (mouse keyboard) to see if that speed up booting. USB stuff can cause very slow boot, just see if it makes a difference first.

Reformat/reinstall Windows or new drive would be a good start.

Buy a proper 4GB kit of RAM as well. At the moment you're running mismatched modules
which means no dual channel for you.

at first i thought it was my half full external harddrive. so i was told to unplug it. I did and it was just as slow. i noticed a diffrent in login speed but not boot up speed. Ill go and free up all my usb ports etc and see what happens.

I tried dual ram and vista didnt let me, i borrowed a set of 1gig which fit but it didnt start up, i took it to pc world ( only pc shop in my area ) and they tried a set the same size, it still didnt start up, the drivers or something didnt work on my vista ( i think )

One thing you could do, is use your 500GB as your primary HDD, install your OS onto it after moving your important data from it onto another drive, this would meany our primary drive is formatted, and you can put your old primary as a secondary, allowing you to copy all the necessary data back over easily.

That's if the 500GB was internal, It's only just struck me that it could be the external you were talking about, sorry if it is.

Basically I'm reccomending you format, but running on those specs is never going to achieve any awards.

Also take note from reflux, running your RAM at dual channel will do you some good. Finally, it looks like your running 500MB less RAM than you have fitted, is that Vista 32 bit? If so, your losing some of your RAM by not running a 64 bit OS

Hope some of this helps :)

Assuming your machine is a Presario SR2129UK (partially obscured on your uploaded screen dump) then the HP documentation states that it’ll take Core 2 Duo E4x00 and E6x00 series processors. If it’ll take those processors then it may well take others. I would have thought that any Core 2 chip would be a decent upgrade from a 2.8GHz Pentium D.

As it is a HP/Compaq then you’re not going to have any overclocking options.

The machine does however appear to use a standard Micro-ATX motherboard with DDR2 memory so if necessary it could easily be replaced without having to buy too many other parts.

right i just restarted my pc with NOTHING atol in my usb ports, had no keyboard or mouse. the startup was still the same speed. I used a stopwatch, 8minutes and 32 seconds.
Redgie my 500gig is a external HD. Iv found a 500gig what will fit but its out of stock on the oc site. When i first got my pc the speed of it was extremely fast, start up time was in seconds ( i understand now that i got stuff installed it will take a while longer but not as long as right now ). Yes i know i have 32bit and im loseing 500mb But try explaining to that to your dad ( im 17 ) who doesnt belive anything you say about computers.

bremen1874 Iv been around a lot of people and they say i will have to upgrade my motherboard for another processor If it can take core 2 duo E4x00, E6x00 series what would you recommend?

No good upgrading/overclocking hardware without sorting your OS installation. Like sticking a bigger engine in a car with flat tyres - it might go faster but it's still sh**.
There's clearly something wrong and windows is timing out on something. Now you can muck about for the next month trying to sort it but the easiest way in the end is re-install...

Ill reformat my pc but first ill buy a os ( stupid pc world didnt give me vista installation disc ) then ill see what happens from there. Thanks

You could always download your particular version of vista as you should already have the COA stuck on your pc somewhere.

Nope i dont think so RJC. I have a thing what restores my pc back to a date if thats what you mean?

Coupe69 i have been looking for that for a while now. The only numbers/serials i have with the pc is the main circuit board and the system model, i could try and give the system model number into pc world and see if they will give me a disc?

is there no sticker on the side of your comp with your vista serial number? If there is then you can go here and order a copy of x64 vista which will take advantage of all your ram and all you pay is shipping...http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx

Just make sure you do a complete format of all your internal drives before you reinstall vista as they are almost certainly why you are getting a very slow boot.

Dont buy another hard disk unless you really want the space. A much more worthy upgrade will be to get a core2duo/quad processor. With a fresh O/S install and a new processor your comp will be fairly quick. If you were happy with the speed of the machine when you first got it however then dont worry about the processor but just make sure to format and reinstall vista!
