Overclocking my Q8300

I have started to overclock my Q8300 @ 2.5 stock. I have got it to run at around 2.7 just by upping the FSB to 370. When i try to go any higher it crashes within a few minutes of running prime95. I know that i will have to increase the CPU voltage but not sure how much to increase it each time. My motherboard is ASUS P5QL Pro. Would like to get it overclock it to 3.0GHz, but i have heard that this CPU isnt the best for overclocking.

When you up the voltage in bios does it up the voltage by one or does it jump because on my mobo its at 1.1625 the next voltage it will go to is 1.1750 how much does yours go up by?

Just after checking there and I think it only lets you type in the voltage. In the BIOS it says that the CPU Voltage is 1.248

Try scrolling over the voltage in the bios then click the + button on your keypad and see how much it jumps by

hmm ok, take it upto 1.379 then increase the mhz by 5 each time and see how you go..

Don't forget, as you increase the fsb you are also increasing the speed your ram is running at so your ram may be trying to run faster than it's rated speed and not liking it. Get around this by using the FSB to NB straps and Dram frequency. Aim to have it running at or below it's rated speed until you find the max you can get out of the cpu.

Don't go throwing loads of voltage at the cpu to start off with as it's more than likely not the problem. My Q9550 for example does 3.6Ghz on stock volts before i need to tweak voltages. As you increase the fsb you will most likley have to start increasing the NB voltage as well.

Being a P43 chipset board it is likely to top out at 400-420mhz on the fsb should you get that far.

Can we have some more info on your ram please, looks like you have 2x2GB and 2x1GB? . . . what speeds are the sticks and are they all the same manufacturer and speed or are they mixed? . . . you can download CPU-z here and inspect each stick using the [SPD] tab . . .

Hopefully they are all similar and at least DDR2-800 or even better DDR2-1066 . . . heres the basic info you need to hike that chip up to 3.0GHz with minimal effort
