Overclocking my Windforce 670

Hi guys :)

I'm fairly new to overclocking graphics cards, but I'm getting on okay with my 670.

I've got the voltage and power usage set to the highest it will go (locked to 112% and 1.175v) and managed to get 1228mhz core, 3500mhz memory clock perfectly stable.

My question is, because the card is so damn cool (59 degrees under load, as low as 29 idling, and this is with the fans set to minimum speeds), can I overclock it further by unlocking the voltage?

I feel it must be able to go quite a bit higher if it were allowed to.

I know on CPU's in general the overclock is normally limited by temperature, but I'm unsure how to proceed with GPU's... I run nvidia surround at 5760x1080 so it'd be really helpful to get a few extra fps :).

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

If you were able to completely tear the guts out of it, it would make next to no difference to you gaming experience, You need twice as much power as you have to game at 5760x1080 with the latest games !

I don't play all games at 5760x1080, although lots of them do seem to run perfectly well. Black Ops 2, Farcry3, GTAIV, F1 2012 all seem to run on nvidia surround in playable framerates. I get 86fps average from F1 2012, and at least 60+ from BlackOps2.

In some things though, it does struggle. In Farcry3 I get 30-40fps, and it'd be nice to squeeze every last bit I can out of it.

I've considered going SLI with another windforce card, but if I can get an extra few frames it might help in the mean time.... and seen as it is so cold I thought there may be more to get out of it!

YOU are responsible for anything that happens. Read instructions carefully! I took my card from 1189 to 1300 with this mod, performance increase was *definitely* noticeable.

You will need another one to get games completely playable through surround though.

for that resolution... you need 2 670's as minimum
no amount of overclocking will help you get playable framerates on high settings

I keep hearing that... although I dont see why. Crysis, Farcry and the others push it a lot and get down to 30fps in surround, but most games I play have been perfectly playable. For example F1 2012 which at ultra settings and 8x CSAA gets 86fps average in the benchmark.

I would love a second 670 at some stage, and will probably go for it when I've got the cash, although I've been very impressed with the performance of one so far.

Thanks for the kgb link illuz! Playing with it now. Managed to get as high as 1320mhz core and 3650mhz memory so far, tested with Heaven on max and got 53fps. Still fiddling now :).

um... that seems odd... because of the few F1 2012 benches I can find, one guy has 2 x 7970's and only gets around 83FPS
and a review of the GTX680 ichill shows 52FPS

looks like you have a magic golden 670 if it matches 2 7970's and beats a factory OC'd 680 by 37%
I don't know if they used the in game benchmark or recorded some gameplay however - what do you get in actual gameplay?

30FPS in farcry3 sounds about right though

I had a single 670 on a 2560x1440 monitor and found it dipping to 50's and in to 40's in several games so added a 2nd and now everything is locked at 60FPS on maxiumum settings
overclocking my single card from 1189 to 1270 gave me single digit frame rate improvements
