Overclocking not working?

Hi all

strange one this... I used to overclock my 8Gb Crucial Ballistix RAM from 1333Mhz to 1600Mhz on my Gigabyte H61MA-D3H board - I then had it replaced for a H77M-D3H and im sure I used to overclock it on this one, but for a while (after I had some problems which turned out too be acronis true image 'wake from sleep' scheduling crashing the comp) I set it back to default.... now some months later I thought I would put it back to 1600Mhz, when I put it up to 1600Mhz and 'save & exit' the speed actually remains at 1333Mhz..??

I have definitely had it at 1600Mhz as I recall checking it in CPU-Z and it said 800Mhz...just i cant recall which board i checked with on CPU-Z - or if it was both or just the H61 and assumed it was running at 1600Mhz on the H77..??

can anyone help shed some light on this?

in BIOS it says the actual speed is 1333Mhz but its set to put it on 1600Mhz?

can anyone tell me what the Normal, Turbo and Extreme modes do? (Ive tried it on all 3 settings and its the same)

the only difference is...before I was using Intel HD2500 GPU on my core-i5, now im using a nVidia GT-220 on PCI-Ex16 port - that shouldnt make any difference though should it?

thanks

whats it say in cpu-z now? 800? if so that's 1600mhz

sure its not saying deaful 1333mhz and 1600mhz set to in the bios? it usually displays that

if not reflash the same bios again and re enter your ram speed, sometimes the bios sticks in saving/applying settings

no CPU-Z says 667Mhz

yeah its says 1333Mhz speed in current MIT settings (or whatever thats called that shows you current speeds) and in the section to change it says 1333Mhz - then in bit where ive changed it it says 1600Mhz

sorted!! flashed BIOS and works like a treat :) thanks for that... :)

so can you tell me what Normal, Turbo and Extreme do?

its on Turbo (default)

ive OC'd the BCLK to 101.00Mhz too and im getting 1616Mhz - benchmarks from 1333Mhz show improvement on Passmark (2290 vs 2490)

I see my timings are now 9-11-11-30 - where 9-9-9-27

normal/turbo/extreme tighten up the secondary ram timings, its up to you to test with those as it might need more dram voltage for stability

and you can change the timings to 9-9-9-27 if you want to,again it might need a few clicks more dram voltage for stability

anywhere from 1.5v to 1.65v is safe for dram v

i can edit the Dram voltage on this board too, currently on AUTO (1.5v)

will AUTO be no good for lowering the timings? and lowering those timings makes it faster again doesnt it?

what voltage would you says best for my 1333Mhz sticks OC'd to 1600Mhz with 9-9-9-27 timings?

thanks for the help btw :)

ok i went into BIOS and in there it shows the defaults as 9-9-9-24 ?? I dunno what too put in case I break it, I thought it was 9-9-9-27..?

Crucial Ballistix 2x4Gb @ 1333Mhz (OC'd to 1616Mhz x16 & 101Mhz BCLK)

and do I only need to change those 4 settings?

what happens if it doesnt work? will it reset to defaults and let me into BIOS?

EDIT - actually checking it is 9-9-9-24 but im sure CPU-Z reported 27?

thanks

If it doesn't work you may be able to get into the BIOS to reset it. If you can't then you will have to reset your CMOS.

well - ive gone and changed the settings 9-9-9-24 ..only those ones (both channels), saved and rebooted and guess what? - same as before with the RAM overclock issue...its set at that but remains at 9-11-11-30 ...? I left the voltage on AUTO do you think thats why?

is it a beta bios your using? those tend to suffer from not applying the settings, final bios works ok,atleast its that way for my gigabyte z77
