Rite, I do have a pc (obviously  ) but this is not the pc i will be doing the overclocking on. So ignore the sig....

Anyway, i will be buying a new rig in jan with an e6300 an plan to enter the world of overclocking.

I have read guides on how to overclock and just have a few questions about cpu and Ram combinations. Am i correct in thinking that... the e6300 with a fsb of 266mhz will require a ram rated to run at a speed of at least 532mhz (266 DDR) which works out as PC4256 (532x8), now obviously there isnt a pc4256 but give or take this is PC4200 ? so minimum it could run with is this ? Yay or nay ??

If that above was cow fecies then ignore this next bit and please correct me !

SO.... if the FSB was raised to 384mhz (for example) with the multiplyer still at 7, would i need a ram capable of a minimum of 768mhz (384 DDR) wich works out as PC6144 so i would need pc6400 rite ??

Please show me the light !!! I want to overclock my new rig ! (overclocking virgin!)

Depends what motherboard you decide on. If you go with 965 (recommended for e6300 for high fsb) then yeah - 6400 ram is what you should be looking at as a minimum - anything less will limit your possible overclock. However if you go for the nvidia 680i chipset then you can set the memory independantly of the CPU, however this will possibly bottleneck performance with your ram being in effect on a lower divider, also the extra money spent on the 680i chipset could be saved if you went for a cheaper board with higher spec memory. So in short, if I were you I would get something like the P5bdlx paired with 2gig of GskillHZ 6400. That will allow you to max out both the cpu and the memory.

cheers for the answers guys but i was hoping sum1 could tell me weather my theory is rite or not ??

I want to understand overclocking, not have to ask sum1 everytime i want to try sumthing.

I have read various guides to overclocking but either im stupid or the guides assume you know too much because i still dont fully understand !

Anyone....... have a heart, help a n00b ?

you should buy some 6400 (ddr 800mhz - 2*400fsb)

the cpu is 2.13ghz, so if you overclocked it to 3.2ghz it would be 457*7 = 3200mhz.

for ram that can overclock to that speed you would need to buy either team xtreem (from another site) or gskill 6400 or cellshock 6400. as for boards, a lot of us here have gigabyte ds4's, other good boards are asus p5w's, nforce 680i are very expensive, not worth it at the moment.

if you are going for air cooling you should get either:

titan vanessa-l, tuniq tower 120, scyth ninja.

would also recommend a 580+watt psu (depending on what graphics card(s) you buy).

hope this answers your questions.
