Hi guys, (apologies for the long post!)
First off - I have a gigabyte DS3P rev5.0 bios - with a 8800gts and G.Skill 2GB DDR2 PK PC2-6400 ram.
I bought this from OC 2 months ago now with a 6400 chip - I was able to attain a 3.2ghz OC just by the 400x8 and 4.25 voltage going through the cpu nothing else changed. This worked.. mostly - it always seemed a little understable for some reason.. a few random blue screens, games locking up etc, didnt know how to fix it.. didnt know if it was just unstability or the ram etc
Now yesterday - I was given a 6600 chip to try from a friend, he never oc'd it or did anything but use it as normal. It's in the machine now but if i can recall.. it was L746A something? was from a Dell (does that make a difference)
I've been messing around with this chip and I can't make it do anything - I tried at first 9x378 with the same voltage as before.. but it froze at windows - i've tried putting 0.2 extra through the ram but it just locks in an infinite boot cycle. It's hard to get this to stop so its really limiting me experimenting but its very frustrating! I ran it last night at the same voltage with 8x400 ie the same as the 6400 and left orthos over night.. by the time i'd got back it had reset and was sitting at the login prompt. Fast forward to the morning and I left it running at stock with default voltages on orthos and it had reset again midday!
Whats going on? is this chip duff or does that indicate a problem with my ram or mobo or what? The ram doesnt seem to ever boot if it has extra volts put through - i know its not the best but i presumed it would suffice and cost £120 when i bought it heh
Any advice please? Would really appreciate anything you could tell me! Tearing my hair out.. just want it to be stable and over 3ghz really
