Overclocking Q6600

Hi all,

I have been using an E6600 for about 18months, and have had it overclocked at around 3Ghz for most of that time. I recently had the opportunity to buy a 2nd hand Q6600.

I have been using the Q6600 for a couple of weeks, but i am having a real problem overclocking it. The best stable overclock i have had is 2.6Ghz, any higher and i either get random BSOD, or it wont post. I thought it may be the temps, but they look ok to me (around 35deg idle and 47deg load @ 2.6Ghz)

Is this normal? I've always thought the Q6600 was a good overclocker.

Rest of Spec:
Asus P5N-E SLI mobo
Sapphire 4870
4GB Geil Black Dragon
Zalman 9500 Cpu cooler
Zalman ZM-600 HP PSU

Any advice would be great!

i'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the p5n-e sli, doesn't overclock the q6600 at all.

3,2ghz should be easy, just set the fsb to 1333 or something, but the motherboard doesn't like this quad

i've had that combination for a year before i upgraded, and you just can't overclock it unfortunately.

the highest stable overclock was 3ghz, but died 6 months later i believe

if you can sell it and get a different board, its only pci express, so it will throttle your gpu too.

sorry mate :(

Thanks for the replies guys.

nij1046, I've not change the voltage at all, just changed the fsb, and i'm not sure what the VID is?? (sorry, still a bit new to all of this).

ravl585, to be honest, i thought the motherboard was probably at the route of the problem, it's probably time to upgrade anyways as its the last component from my old setup. Any suggestions for a cheap/reliable board for my setup anyone?

thanks again all.

Which stepping is it?

The VID is the stock vcore. Cpuz will tell you what that is.

I have no experience with your motherboard but I'm only using a shuttle and they are far from the best clockers, I can get my Q6600 to 3ghz just by upping the fsb and not touching the voltages. I imagine if you're having that much trouble getting anywhere with it then it may be best looking to see if you can pick up a new board from somewhere

thanks for the link, i can only find bios update 1201, 1203 seems to be only available for the p5n32-e sli. I have updated to 1201 but with no joy, with 2.6Ghz being the max again. Think its time for a new motherboard

Quoted for truth. Had my Q6600 on one of these and highest it could go was 2.8, upgraded to the P5Q in sig and its great, been at 3.6 for months and months stable as you like, had it up to 3.8 but temps and volts were a little high.
