I need some help! I am trying to overclock the q6700 to 3.00ghz and when ever I change any of the settings to overclock, it doesnt power up.

My specs are:
q6700
Gigabyte ga-g31m-es2l
4gb corsair 800mhz
powercolour 4870 512mb
700watt Arctic power psu

First you'll need to download and run 'Coretemp', which will give you the VID voltage for your processor. It could be anywhere between 1.20v and 1.3250v. This is the minimum required voltage for your processor to operate at 2.66ghz. Write down or remember this value, it's your starting point.

Then you'll need to find out the timings and voltage required for your sticks of RAM. The timings may be written on the sticks of memory themselves, or should be in the description of the item on the website you bought it from. I'm running Kinston HyperX 1066mhz stuff which is rated at 2.2v at 5-5-5-15. Yours will no doubt vary unless you have the same RAM.

Ok.

Go into the BIOS, and set any master overclocking options to manual instead of auto, allowing you access to all of the controls you'll need to overclock. On my asus, its called Ai Overclocking Tuner, but yours will probabily be called something else. I've also heard that some overclocking features are hidden from view, and that you have to manually press some keys to get them to show, although i dont know if that applies to your board.

Find the CPU section and enter your VID of your chip. This will provide the CPU with the voltage it requires to get going, and you have your starting reference for overclocking.

Now you need to adjust memory options. I'm not totally sure what speed your RAM is rated for (i'm assuming 800mhz PC6400). When overclocking FSB frequencies, the RAM speed will be on a ratio that also increases/decreases. To limit RAM being the cause of any stability issues (for now), youll need to set the RAM speed to be 800mhz or below (DDR400 or below). I'm not sure what section this is under in your BIOS, but i'm sure you'll find it. Once you have entered in the timings and set the RAM voltage to what it is rated at, restart and load up CPU-Z. Under the memory tab, you should see that the memory is running at 400mhz (CPU-Z uses DDR rate) or below, and you should see the timings as you've set them.

If it is possible, could you take a picture of your BIOS settings? (just the main page with the overclocking options)

id advise you upping your ram voltage to 2.1, this is the standard for 95% of ddr2 modules yet most motherboards set a voltage of 1.8 by default, if the ram voltage is incorrect it could affect your overclock

I have overcloked it to 3.00ghz. The temps are a bit to high though, could this be because of any other setting being wrong? im going to reseat the cpu cooler when get some more thermal compound. The cpu works fine for 5 minutes on prime then i stop it because its at 65 degrees on 2 of the cores lol

What CPU cooler are you using?

65deg-70 deg is pretty normal for most overclocked quads. I wouldnt worry too much unless it goes over 70 deg straight away.
