Hi guys.My Q8200 came back from RMA.So now I want to overclock it but I'm a little scared. The first Q8200 I overclocked to 2.7 Ghz and I accidentally selected in the BIOS of the MB the voltage 2.3 and you could guess what happend. So now if I want to take it up to 2.7-2.8Ghz is that possible on the stock voltage or will I need to increase a lil' bit? Also the cooler is Arctic Cooling Alpine 7 Pro.

So you fried your first one and returned it?

Anyhow, best way to try it is just up the FSB a bit at a time and check its stable before going onto the next increase.

What RAM do you have as PC6400 may stop you getting beyond 2.7Ghz.

Ok.It's done.I oc'ed it to 2.75 Ghz and played Crysis on max settings for 50 minutes and the system is very stable. The idle temp of the CPU is 29*C and underload just before 2 minutes I exited Crysis was 39*C.The voltage is at 1.23.

This is something I have never understood!

If you put, say 1.5v through a cpu then it's still 1.5v regardless of it being air or water cooled.

like oliver says the more volts the hotter the chip will run past a point of around 70c the chip will start to degrade and if run very hot for a long time will shorten the life of the cpu considerably.

No.....you can't really damage a modern intel chip with heat. It's the voltage that will degrade the chip.
