Overclocking quad 9550

I guess the Q9650 needs more volts then a dual to get it stable, and isnt 4.2ghz a too high to get a Q9650 stable at, as Im guessing its possible to get a Q9650 stable at 3.8?

No not at all, 4.2 is attainable with a good chip, mobo & cooling. I have mine on 4.05Ghz on air idling at 35c & after 20 passes of IBT, 72c. I've had it at 4.1Ghz stable with very little change in temps.

I do love my Q9650, it has legs to run alongside most modern systems.

Well it would appear that I am limited by my motherboard, I can't get past 3.6GHz with the Q9650 on my DFI DK-X38. My E8500 at 4.2GHz feels a lot faster. Will probably end up going back to the dual core as trying to get a decent 775 board now is difficult.

Yep.
My Q9650 is running cool and stable at 3.8Ghz with only 1.18Vcore.
It will clock easily to 4.0Ghz on air with only 1.29Vcore, max temp under stress testing 71c.
4.2Ghz needs only 1.32Vcore although the temps are a little uncomfortable for me under stress testing.
This chip runs faster on lower Vcore than my E7500 on the same board.

Okay, managed to source a Gigabyte EP45 board, should arrive this week. Will see what I can get out of the Q9650 then.
