Overclocking Question

Over Christmas I completed my first PC build (link in sig) Basically an AS Rock z68 Extreme4 Gen3 with an i5-2500k

I am not interested in extreme overclocking but a basic increase would be nice. I have been into the bios and changed the turbo boost to 4400 and saved.

Is this really all there is to it? Looking at the tuning utility the CPU speed says 4400mhz CPU temp 46C (nothing running) and I see my voltages with a DRAM voltage of 1.605v I thought I had read somewhere that this needs to be 1.5v but that might have been in relation to something else.

Any advice appreciated
 
Sorry I think an update was running in the background, a Gellid Tranquillo cooler and idle speeds are 32C jumping to 36C and back down again every 10-15 seconds
 
Those temps are certainly not cool for the clock but you dont have the best cooler ever so to be expected i suppose.

Are you using auto voltage? If so you can probebly switch to manual and lower the voltage which would lower the temp a bit.

Get a CPU voltage reading from CPU-Z then switch to manual CPU voltage and lower it a bit from that figure. You should probably also turn on Load Line Calibration to get rid of some of the Vdroop.

Once you have it stable on the lowest possible cpu voltage (vcore) you can try upping the clock a bit.
 
CPU-Z reads 1.336 core voltage

I used the Turbo Boost function that comes with the mobo, you select one of the speeds from a drop down and it says it will auto configure best options.

Using the ASRock extreme tuning utility interface here is what I see:
BCLK/PCIE Frequency 100.00MHz
CPU Ratio x 44.0
GT Frequency 1100MHz

VOLTAGE
CPU Voltage Offset +0.055 V
DRAM Voltage 1.605 V
PCH Voltage 1.059 V
CPU PLL Voltage 1.051 V
VCCSA Voltage 0.925 V
IGPU Voltage Offset 0 mV

Each of those readings has a slider next to them so that they can be changed.

Prime95 is now running test 16 and Min Temp is 56 (was 53 at start of test) and Max 63 (was 62 not been above 65 yet)

Replying here on a different machine..

EDIT - As the tests continue into 800000 Lucas........ temps increased to a maximum of 71 but dropped back to 68

OK, I am pretty sure you can get that voltage down.

The important one is CPU Voltage. Can you change from offset mode to manual mode? If not just lower the CPU Voltage Offset.

I would start at +0.005 and test if that is stable.
 
Okay I am watching my core voltage fluctuate around 1.272 and 1.334 I guess the system is making the changess as they are called for?
 
If so you want to ignore the idel voltage and concentrate on the cpu-z voltage under load (while running prime).

Lower this by lowering the voltage offset. Keep lowering and testing with prime for 10mins or so untill you get a crash. Then put the voltage back up slowly until you can run prime for at least an hour with no crash. Then you can start trying the next multiplier for higher clock speeds.
 
No it is changing while the test is running without me doing anything
I wrote the last reply before i read this.

That is strange. It shouldn't be changing that much. Are you still being overclocked automatically? Try and selct a manual overclock mode somewhere.

Your MY First Build link says Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3, but I can't find details for this on the overclockers site.
Did you get it elsewhere or is it supposed to be Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz XMS3.
In which case go into the bios and set the XMP profile which should set the timmings to 9-9-9-24 then check the DRAM voltage, you can set this manually to 1.55v.

Yes I wanted to leave the test running or a full one hour, it has finished now and will go through your suggestions trying 10 minute runs.

I haven't set any profiles, that is what they are advertised as. When I check using CPU-Z it confirms 9-9-9-24

I have set the DRAM voltage to 1.5v and running another Prime95 test, cores are running at 54C 53C 58C 57C fluctuating by 1-2 degrees maximum
 
You NEED to set the XMP profile for the ram or set them manually, DON'T leave them on auto in the bios.

Try these settings once you've done that, then test with Intel Burn Test, it's a lot quicker than Prime and will stress the CPU more giving a better indication of how stable it is.( I can run @ 4.6GHz with that vcore 1.312v, so you should get 4.4GHz unless your chip is very vcore hungry)
Once you've found a 24/7 you're happy with you can run Prime for 8 hrs to test long term stability.

If it passes IBT with these settings you can lower the offset by 0.01v and re test until you get a fail. Then raise it by 0.005v, that should find your lowest possible stable vcore.

Using offset is MUCH better than manual as it lowers the vcore at idle.
