overclocking temps

First off the main components

Mobo: Asus prime z390-p
Cpu: I5 9600k
Cooler: Modified corsair h45

For a start I've modified my cooler. I put arctic thermal paste on it. I took the fan away and replaced it with 2 akasa vipers running in push pull so that cooler is running better than at stock specs.

I've overclocked the cpu. 5ghz @ 1.32v. I'm currently running prime to test it for stability. Prime has been running for 3 hours so far with no issues. I'm actually using it to post this while it runs.

The question I have is about the temps. For the past nearly 3 hours the temps are as follows. 83 degrees on one core, 78-80 degrees on all the rest. I'm using hwmonitor to monitor this.

Are those temps to high? Should I lower the clock a little bit?

Seems ever so slightly high imo,I like to stay below 80c, but your not gonna be running prime 24/7

If stable you could try lowering cpu v little by little

Using pc day to day and gaming I wouldnt worry too much

Thanks for confirming what I already suspected. I had a i5 3570k in my previous build with a corsair h80 and even oc'd to 4.6 ghz, it wouldn't go over 72 in prime. I'm not used to seeing a cpu go over 80 and im not comfortable with it. I think ill try lowering the clock to 4.8ghz at around 1.28v and see if that helps. It's nice to know I managed to get what seems to be a stable 5ghz though.

Don't need to reduce your overclock just because of Prime, you have two other options:

1. AVX Offset (if your motherboard has the option, and best to confirm it actually works after that).

2. Set a temperature and/or power limit throttle, slightly beyond what you see your system needs for everything else, while acting as a constraint when Prime or other AVX stuff is in action.

Just an update. I have 4.9ghz @ 1.3v and the max temps are 79 degrees under prime avx. I tested both 5ghz stable and 4.9ghz stable so i'm sticking with 4.9ghz. The performance is brilliant during bench. A def boost over stock. Besides I wont be pushing these 6 cores to that kind of level during every day use. Thanks for the help and feedback.

While temp is too warm for my liking it's not bad considering Corsair H45 is only rated 140w TDP. As a comparison some air coolers are rated 360w TDP.
