Overclocking the 780

I can't see a thread regarding how people are overclocking the 780 so sorry if one already exists.

I received my MSI Gaming Edition 780 yesterday & fit a waterblock so there should be no heat issues.

Stock boost is 1058
Stock memory is 3005

I haven't tested ramping the memory up yet but I found I can only put another 120 on the core making 1178. This is with power target at 103%. I see most people manage more then that in the Heaven top 100 thread. Anything above +120 on the core makes Heaven Valley crash, i also notice that even though the core shows 100% usage, my power usage is only at 78%.

In afterburner are people upping the voltage?
It allows up to +38mv but I haven't touched that.

When clocking the memory, what is classed as "safe" and what should I look for to suggest I am pushing it too far?
 
From what ive seen, upping the voltage by +38mv is how people are getting that extra bit out of the card. I think it takes it to 1.2v, which I think is perfectly save (thats the limit nvidia put on the card). Theres a few BIOs out there that will let you unlock the voltage limit and really give the overclocking a go.
The main issue with it is temps, which will be fine as you've got blocks on them.
 
Max the temp target, power target and voltage. That should boost it a little more.
You could flash it with syknet's ln2 bios to get a few extra mV.
 
What water block have you got on that out of interest?

If you want to push your card then the only option is to flash the bios as shown here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18545210

This will allow you up the voltage, remove the vdroop and really push the card providing you keep the temps low. Also be aware that the card VRMs can be iffy if they are not cooled enough.

With the above I managed 1311 core and 1727 at 1.2v and with fan speed on 100% managed a 1670 in Heaven 4 benchmark. Temps stayed just below 80 degrees but I don't run it 24/7 at that.

If I was under water i'd try for higher.

I just have a standard VGA block that sits on the GPU.
The card has a metal plate over the ram and VRMs which I have stuck some ramsinks to, after 3 hours of BF4 the plate was only warm so the VRMs haven't been heating up much at all.

I don't plan to flash the bios, was mainly checking that it is safe to up the mv to +38, really just seeing if others are doing that.

How do you know if you push the memory too far? It's been a good few years since I have properly overlocked a graphics card.
 
+38 will be fine.

The way I do it is simply leave core at default, +50 on the memory slider and run a benchmark, either Heaven 4 or heaven Valley. If it passes, I add another +50 and try again. If it pops up with a driver error I lower back 25 and try again.

Same with the core although you might notice that if you have a higher memory clock your core clock will suffer and vice versa. It's trying to find a good balance.

Try +150 core and +250 memory and see if that works for starters.
