Overclocking the 8800GTS

Ok, call me a n00b but it's been a while since I did any gfx overclocking. Got a load of quick questions that some kind soul might like to answer for me :)

1. What, on average, will the 8800GTS 640 run at? 600/1800 seems to be a fairly common overclock, will they pretty much all reach these speeds?

2. Is all memory used on these cards 1ns?

3. Tried playing about with RivaTuner but when I changed the speed under any of the three options (standard 2D, low power 2D, performance 3D), the changes affect all three, don't understand this.

4. After upping the mem speed and running some tests, I went back to RivaTuner and first dropped the mem speed back to normal then disabled the overclocking option but the performance monitor bit still said my mem was overclocked - took a reboot to revert to stock, this was a bit worrying!

5. When trying to find the max overclock for core & mem, what do you guys use to test the card? Is it just a case of running 3DMark and looking for corruption or artifacts? What is/are the best progs to stress the core/mem and provoke such problems?

Thanks and sorry for the questions. Did wonder if this was better off in the Overclocking forum but that seems to be more CPU based and I know what I'm doing there :)

I can answer a few.

A. I get 630/2000 out of my gainward. Most seem to do about the same.

A. I used 3dmark 06. If the core is too high it freezes and if the mem is too high it gives an out of memory error.

BTW I use expertool to oc my card 24/7 to 627/1900.

4) yes u will have to reboot to get the clocks back to stock if cancelling overclocking
2) If think all gts have 1ns mem as most are all stock cards

Well I've just had a play around with ATITool and it appears to be solid at 645/2030 with no artifacts in ATITool and a clean run through 3DMark06.

Think I'll knock it back a bit to 640/2000 and see how it goes.

whats with the memory slider in ATItool, why does mine say 500Mhz yet my memory is clocked at 2000Mhz

Dunno why it would read 500Mhz. It does show the "half" speed before DDR doubling is taken into account but in this case you should be seeing 1000Mhz.

ATITool does seem a bit weird - sometimes it won't accept changes to the core clock speed yet if I change it in RivaTuner it will reflect the change.

ok chaps let me ask something slightly OT. has anyone tried to OC the gts under Vista 32bit ? if selected in ntune the find optimal freqs it from 512/798 drops to 478/798 !

i cant oc not even one mhz (1) . any help is appreciated
